Hi Chopperdog,

The book "4WD Days out of Perth" by Ian Elliot and Nick Underwood has the Powerlines Track listed as "History in the Hills". It shows a nice drive through to the Mount Observation picnic site, which is a very scenic trip! Did it with the brother in law earlier this year. From the Sawyers Valley Tavern it is about 24 km of 4WDing prior to leaving the track on Talbot Road West.

The book recommends the 2134 Wooroloo map, or the 2234 Northam map at 1:100,000 scale, or the DECAP Mundaring map at 1:50,000 scale.

The book is quite a good listing of some decent 4WDing trips out of Perth, and is available from www.western4wdriver.com.au

The trip that you did was probably 11.5km of the track, from Sawyers Valley. There is a lot more to go!

The track does get a little more difficult a few more km from there. There is some fairly steep terrain just past Flynn Road, and a couple of jump-ups that tested my Landcruiser with OME 2" lift. I made it through without any vehicle injuries, and some good photographs.

There are some historic saw pits towards the beginning of the trip, which are good to see.

If you go on a weekend, the track will be full of weekend warriors in barely street legal cars. You'll see some impressive pieces of kit! Might see you out there!

Enjoy!

Charles

Hi Hilary,

I bought my copy at a news agency in Broome, but I have seen it in in Perth at other newsagencies.

As for the maps, I'd suggest the Department of Land Administration might be able to point you in the right direction. They are DOLA and DEC maps. I have been able to find the DOLA maps by two sites from google: if you google "2134 Wooroloo" and "2234 Northam" you will find a couple of online stores where the maps are available for less than $10.00 each. I won't post the links to keep the Moderators happy. I also found a place that sells 1:100,000 maps for the entire south west of WA for $115.00 - could be much cheaper than buying all maps individually!

I would try the Department of Environment and Conservation directly for the DECAP Mundaring map.

Hope this helps! I don't actually own any of these maps... found that the book had very clear directions. I know that's not much use to you when the book isn't available.

Nice looking rig, btw (from another 80ser fan). Where was that muddy crossing? Your vehicle must be about the same vintage as mine.

Thanks again Charles
Just ordered those two maps ..Hope your right as they don't have an over view of what they are ....I will wait to get these then go further if needed ...?? The pic is my 80 on the Powerline track ..That's the first of hopefully many more off-road adventures ..Been doing a lot of beach trips (two rocks,Lancelin,Lancelin to Cervantes )so it was great fun to do a bit of REAL 4w driving .Where abouts in the West are you??? We may be able to catch up for an adventure or two ?? The wife and i just bought an Off road camper trailer so if i can get her over her natural nervousness of going off road (OOOHHH there's the beach ,,,we might get bogged ooohhh don't go there etc etc etc ) i would love to head off and just camp..Most of what we would do would be leave Sat morn and come home Sun arvo ..On my own i can leave lunchtime Fri in which case i would sleep in the car ...What are your thoughts ??? A couple of us are going up the beach this weekend so really looking forward to that ..Haven't been for a couple of weeks ...Any way enough of my waffling ..Talk soon ..Thanks again for your help

Cheers Hilary ..

Yes, I think I know that very bit... Just to the east of one of those jump-ups. There's a chicken trail to the passenger side of the car if we're thinking of the same part. I didn't get a photo as I negotiated that part. I used low range 2nd, and my Cruiser lost traction on the ramp down, in the slippery mud. It splashed mud over my entire car, and some inside as well...

I'm in Perth most of the time, though work takes me away for the occasional extended period. Enjoy the beach up around that area a lot! Haven't been up since the end of last year, when I spent a night (alone unfortunately) in a set of dunes just off Wedge Island. Made a fantastic lamb roast in the camp oven, though!

There are some other nice camp sites around Toodyay with some decent 4WD work to be done (also mentioned in the book).

My better half is getting good at the camping thing. The fact that I bogged my vehicle to the axles the first time I took her onto the beach at Ledge Point (nearly 3 years ago, now) didn't help that. Still, since putting BFGs on, I haven't (touch wood) been bogged since. I took her across the Gibb River Road when I worked in Broome last year. She actually did enjoy that!

We have an off-road trailer as well, and are certainly keen for some convoy trips! (The rear space in an 80ser isn't long enough for me to sleep, unfortunately... one of the disadvantages of measuring in at 6'4"! And the storage system I'm building right now..) We'll have to keep in touch, and organise something soon.
