I'm working in Korea for a few years now and am looking at buying a local 2nd hand 4wd.

I know this forum is titled ExplorOz but I'll see if I can sneak in a bit of Explorekorea.

Here the SsangYong Korandas are very popular, They are a sort of copy to the Jeep Wrangler and have a 2.3lt turbo diesel in them with a rotary low range switch.
Just wondering if any one out there has any knowledge of these SsangYong motors or what to look out for. They seem to go pretty cheap here, around 3-4 grand for a 2000 model.
There are lots of hills and rivers around here that look like they need exploring and aparently have trout and bass in them (this will keep me away from the bars), The other option is a Kia Sportage. boo....
Any imported car seems to cost a fortune here.
Thanks in advance any info would be great.

Cheers,
Glenn

It will probably be ok if you dont drive them too hard, but resale values are very telling.
At least you will be able to get spares unlike the early models in australia when the dealer closed his doors and left owners in the lurch.

I think the Kia had a better reputation amongst owners than Ssangyong

Hi,

Ssangyong and Kia don't have a connection.

Kia and Hyundia do, same organization different names.

Cheers

Glenn,

The Ssangyong Korando is seen in Australia but not common, the like most Ssangyong 4WD's, they had a choice of 2.3 litre and 3.2 litre petrol engines or 2.9 litre diesel engine, all produced on license from Mercedes-Benz. Much of the running gear is Mercedes as well.
The 2.7 diesel that they currently use in the Rexton and other, is the same as in the Mercedes and Jeeps

Ugly car never driven one, as you are in Korea parts and repairs won't be an issue and I am sure that as long as you don't trash it you get a similar return if you sell it.

Thanks for that Tony,
I guess when I get one I may have to treat it gently, will be a bit different from the 100 series at home. They are a bit ugly but ...when in Rome...

Glen,

If you are keen on getting a Ssangyong vehicle look at the range of Rextons. They have many more options than we do in Australia.

Evening Glen.
I worked in South Korea for seven months in 1986 and enjoyed my time over their,i was right up on the DMZ for two weeks and then out on a small island called...Small hong Doe, just off Kunsann, If you are going up to the DMZ area be careful, as the local police have told me to keep to the tracks and roads as their are still a lot of unexploded mines,up in that area...........have fun and be careful.
Cheers for now...Williamh...Bunbury...WA
