Does anyone know when the current incarnation of the Hilux began to have optional side curtain airbags? Do you think it would be almost impossible to source one second hand that was 1) diesel 2) automatic 3) 4x4 and 4) has the side curtain airbags?

garbage,
It should not be an issue picking a second handy up with all the fruit you require. They have been out for a while now with the side curtain air bags. The issue will be that they were mainly fitted tom SR5's and they want a mint for them second hand.

Check your new price out before heading out and looking second hand. Might not be that big a difference between them. Top truck all the same. Mine 06 auto Diesel.
Only way to go i recon.

I have an '09 auto diesel SR and recently had the transmission temp light come after climbing up some very steep hills on the Bloomfield track, just North of Cairns with an estimated 500kg load including the canopy on the back. After leaving it idling for a while at the top of the hill, the light went off but after doing some web research when I got home, I saw that this is a very common problem for auto Hiluxes, especially when towing or heavily laden.

The fix is apparently to fit an aftermarket transmission cooler, haven't looked at the dollars involved in that yet, but definately would factor in fitting one if you are buying an auto Hilux.

ctaplin,
I have only suffered this issue when in 4x4h. Never in all my towing with a 1t camper and a good load in the tray. This includes in 40+ degree's back of beyond at all sorts of speeds. These speeds include 110km/h and 25km/h just out of putting it in 4x4.

I think if you pick the correct gear all is fine. But still a good idea if you have the funds to fit a cooler.

Agree. I fitted an aftermarket cooler, it is a $200 odd dollar job so no big deal
