I have being having problems when i disengage my CD, as i change gears (Manual) a large clacking sound come from the front (Assuming its the diff).
So i have just being running it with CD on, and i have front wheel diff locks turned off so there is no problem with turning.
Has anyone else had this problem, had the gearbox and transfer overhauld so that cannot be it.

Just for specific's im running a FJ80 which is petrol 3F engine (carby).

Thanks

I know with my old girl, sometimes when I've been in Low range 1st, change to Low second and then maybe third. when it's time to shift back into high range, come to a complete stop, the CD light doesn't go off for about 50 meters.
Sometimes if I reverse for about a meter, select 1st, it will go off straight away.
Hmmm.
I'm sure the guys at Lcool will be able to point you in the right direction.
Yeah let us know what is the cause of it.

Cheers.

Let me see if I've got this right.
With the centre diff unlocked (and verified that it is disengaged because the light goes out) you take off and as you change up through the gears there is this noise at every gearchange. But driving in each gear everything is OK.
I am assuming also that you are on bituemen and any diff locks are unlocked.
If my above understanding is correct then does the sound happen while the clutch is disengaged?
I feel that I am misunderstanding but on the other hand your description is lacking in detail.

Yes sorry, Centre diff light is definately off and when i change gears up or down, as i reach the clutch point a big clank sound occurs (For expample the sound when you release the clutch too fast).

Driving is completely fine, but the noise gets very annoying, and yes i drive on bitumen.

Hope this helps?

Hi overgrownz.
OK your explanation eliminates the possibility of incorrect disengagement of the centre diff (by the light being off) Sadly it seems to eliminate the simple things.

So, if the sound is definately coming from the front it certainly sounds like the front diff but I cannot understand why the noise dissappears when the centre diff is locked.

One way you might get a clue is to by turning the tailshafts by hand back and forth to see if there is excessive backlash or noise on the front one. You could even do the same test with the front jacked up while in neutral.

If you can definately isolate the noise as coming from the front diff the next step will be inspection. Start with the easy stuff first, check the drive between the axle and front hubs. If not that then the diff centre might have to come outfor a look. That's assuming that you have identified it as definately from the diff.

You mentioned having diff locks which I am unfamiliar with but again the diff centre would have to come out to check that. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Regards Cruiser
