Is Birdsville Track open

SA Roads website indicates that Birdsville Track (inclusive of Cooper Creek ferry) is open and operating but I am getting advice from some on the road that given recent rain (as of 11/8/10) the Birdsville Track is closed.

Any immediate updates would be gratefully received so I can advise a friend who is currently in FNQ and wanting to return south via Birdsville Track.

Thanks

G'day Adey

As you mentioned, SA roads website indicates that Birdsville track is still open to 4WD's. As per attached link, Marree has had about 14mm of rain but Birdsville 0.

Elders weather Marree

Suggest you check SA roads website first thing tomorrow morning & maybe ring Mungerannie Pub tonight (08 8675 8317) to get some local knowledge on possibility of track being closed tomorrow ??

Regards

Just be careful, we got caught at the ferry the other day when the front came through as the wind was too strong whipping up waves on the cooper which stopped the ferry running.
We were then faced with the decision to wait it out 12, 24,36? hours till it ran again and the prospect of being stuck there when the rain came. We headed south and just made it to Marree before the weather, others weren't so lucky.
AFAIK the track is still open to 4wd's but very muddy at the bottom end as is the bit between Marre and Lyndhurst.
The bottom of the Oodnadatta track was closed but is open again now, Roxby to the Oodna track is still closed at the moment

Howdy Peter, I wondered if it was you that we passed on Monday, you had just returned from where the water has cut the track on the southern edge of the Birdsville Track and you turned onto the track heading to the ferry. We were in a white 100s towing a T Van.

Cheers
Peter

Yeh it was mate, Peter and Sandy spent the night with us at Claytons.
You must have been just behind us, we left Claytons at 11, rain started at Farina at lunch time.
