Hi
has anyone had experience using the cigerette lighter to cigerette lighter devices which are supposed to recharge a flat battery enough to enable car to be started.
thanks Kc

hi kcandco
you'll most likely burn out the cig wiring and or bow fuses and or do a lot of electric damage within the wiring harness
the cig wiring for starters would'nt carry enough amperage
i personely would even consider such an attemp
why would'nt you just buy a decent set of jumper leads and do it the safe and conventional way

The ones I have seen limit the current to less than 10 amps and up the voltage above 12.6V to charge the flat battery. Those ones should not burn out any wiring.
I agree that jumper leads appear a better option (faster) but I didn't think that wasn't his real question.

Better off jump starting with a decent set of leads ...... as the wait time for the recharge via the cig lighters would be a while .... not too mention the fuel cost to the other vehicle.
If the vehicle with the flat battery draws too many amps ... it could
well overload the little wiring used for the cig lighter .... as mentioned above.
I trickle charge via the cig lighter with one of those cheapo solar panels ... The process works OK if you have the time.

If your vehicle has dual battery system then all you need is 1 jumper lead, connect the + together.

Hi Doug
Is it as simple as that. A vehicle that has a flat batt and has a duel batt system.
Then all you need to do is to put 1 jumper lead between the 2 +'s on the batts and then you can turn in over? Is that right?
Thanks

Yep, I have 1 jumper lead cut down to 600mm long for easy storage, works on my LC .

Yep, I've done it. Don't even need the lead, I use the cable from the 2nd battery to the winch. just unhooked from the winch and put it on the starter positive and away she went.

I used to use one mini (10 cm long) 12v, 15a, jumper lead to connect the 2 terminals of the Rotronics dual battery isolator together, therefore connecting the entire 12v battery system together for solar charging the Cranking battery or assisting the Cranking battery to start the diesel.
Now I just flick this permanently wired 140 Amp auto disconnect switch to achieve the same outcome.

You say; "cigerette lighter to cigerette lighter devices which are supposed to *recharge* a flat battery enough to enable car to be started"
If it uses so little current not to blow all the fuses etc, it will take all day to recharge the battery, better off to use the 'storage device' your thinking of using to recharge to jump start the vehicle.
(unless it's a solar panel - as it's not a storage device)

Thanks Everyone
Yes I too am a skeptic, but was talking to a friend a few weeks ago who has used one with succcess. He connected the 2 vehicles for a while before starting the dead one. Maybe he's lucky.
cheers Kc

It seems everyone is falsely assuming you jump start viia a cigarette ligher wire.
The OP said "cigarette lighter to cigarette lighter recharging"
These devices do seem like they would have a use.

Thinking of getting one myself simply to boost a small
camp / backup battery

Nope....but Ive tried cheap jumper leads and they melt, so I wouldn't like your chances of doing it in any sort of a hurray? LOL

I have one sourced from Derek at Sidewinder and they work. Simply connect between the two vehicle cigarette lighter sockets and leave for the four minute timer countdown. It provides enough charge for the vehicle with the flat battery to start. See here. No connection etc

well that ll depends on how flat the battery is , if dead flat, four minutes wont get your car started

yes, at the amps stated it will take hours to charge a *flat* battery.
If you need to start a vehicle with a *flat* battery it's quicker to just attach a set of jumper cables to the second battery, and you can start it instantaneously, then you can drive away as planned with minimal delay.
