I have owned a D22 ST-R for 5 years and the 3 litre engine hasn't missed a beat - been to Simpson and back and many other
places.
I'm thinking of upgrading to the new D22 - anyone got any comments or feedback on the 2.5 litre engine now fitted? Is it as reliable as the old one?
thanks
Dave G

one thing ive noticed quite a bit is front brakes and rotors wear out at around 40000ks.the ones ive changed are all tradies utes.funny thing is local nissan dealer charges around $800 to do front brakes and dont use genuine parts we use the same parts from same supplier and charge around $300.local nissan service guy says there having problems with leaking injectors caused by running such high pressure.and theres a rubber boot around the gear shift that splits allowing noise ans smell in.ive changed a few drive shaft boots there more like plastic than rubber so the crack easy.but people love the power of them
cheers

Really!!!!! The 'high' pressures run in this engine are no different to other common rail engines ....20-30,000psi and they are fitted with piezo injectors that work a treat from my experience and I now have 46000km on my 2.5 crdi albeit it is fitted to my D40 Navara.
I agree the brake thing but the wear rate is directly proportional to the weight carried and the propensity for the driver to over-use the right boot. While I've already bought a set of DBA slotted rotors and Bendix pads to fit to
mine I still have approximately 5mm of wear before I'll do the change. BTW this pad/rotor wear nexus is a feature of Euro 5 build standards and is common across all vehicles that have a high presence in the European market....eg Mercs, VW, BMW etc.

HI dfg,
I had a STR D22.... 3 Ltr for 3 years before upgrading to STR D22..2.5 Ltr 12 months ago.
I'm more than happy with the new 2.5 motor........prefer it to 3 Ltr .......just as much power and torque as 3 Ltr........less turbo lag .......better fuel economy .......no problems so far.
This is the same motor as D 40 but de-tuned with different turbo and manifolds....should last a bit longer than D40 motor as it is not being flogged to reach max power and torque. cheers Butch

Thanks guys - I just wonder how far they can push these little engines before they shorten their life.

Well, Mitsubishi are now running 2.5l and landrover have run them for years with out dramas (not including some electrics). I've been watching the nissans for a while and besides clutches and brakes they seem to be holding out ok.

despite his name, Nutta is on the money. It's quite possible to get 500K k out of a 2.5TD. The newer technology is just highlighting how inefficient old TDs were. I must admit that something like a Nissan TD42 provides a bit more peace of mind as there's less to go wrong, but for that comfort of avoiding a rare problem, you'll have to put up with sluggish performance and poor fuel economy every day...
