Hi Guys,
i attempted to replace my timing belt today, I have a 3.5 L double over head cam V6. I had the cam gears lined up along with the crank at TDC and when I loosened the belt the cam gears lost their marks. I am so wishing that I took it to a mechanic. I am trying to organize a mobile mechanic (not much luck on the wekend) should I take the rocker covers off and adjust each cam gear so that it fires in the correct order?
anyone know how to fix the problem and want to earn some dollar? I am located in forest lake
Brisbane and would like to get it going tomorrow so that I can get to work on Monday. My mobile is 04

Hi. You need to make up some small pieces of timber or similar and lock the two cam gears each side into position. Jam the timber into the space between the gears with the marks lined up. They are a bugger of a thing to work on but if you persevere you will get there. Turn the engine over by hand once assembled and recheck the marks line up before you reassemble the rest of it. regards,Bob.

So you are saying you took the belt off and the cam gears have no marks at all? And thus you now have no idea where the cams are sitting? They should either have a dab of paint or a notch cut in the outer ring of the cam gear. THese notches should line up with a mark on the heads. Do you have the manual for the motor? Yours is the DOHC 6G74 isn't it?

No, the post indicated that he had the marks lined up with the motor at TDC and when the belt was loosened, all the marks moved

Be particularly careful not to rotate the tensioner pulley 1/2 of a turn otherwise the belt will go tighter when the motor rotates.For memory keep the 2 holes to the top.when you reckon you are ready to put the covers on, rotate the motor by hand and watch what the tensioner is doing.Good luck.

Hi, Silverpaj,
like you I found out that the quad-cam threw the cams off TDC marks when the belt tension is released. There are threaded holes behind the gears, I was able to put bolts into these holes and with washers, lock the gears/cams at the TDC marks. Took me three goes to get the belt tight around the four cams, start on the l/h bank. get it tight and seated around the
water pump, (which you should replace at the same time).
I also used spring-clamps to hold the belt in place on the gear-sets while feeding around the idler gears. Need to have the crank about one tooth anti-clockwisebefore feeding the belt around that gear. Good idea to replace the bearings in the idler pulley while you are at it, saves a repeat performance before the next 100 000 ks is up.
Rotate engine by hand 2 full turns to recheck the marks.
It CAN be done!Slowly does it and you will manage. I asked a Mitsubishi Mechanic if he wanted to earn cash and give me a hand to do the belt job, when he found out that it was a quad cam, he declined. Be careful to run the sensor cables correctly so that they don't get caught in the belt. Big money again if they do.
