How do you update a sat nav's in vehicles that have them built in.? dose the service department at Toyota, Ford etc do it when you have the vehicle serviced, otherwise after 12 months you are going to miss out on the new roads, and would be better off with a Tom Tom hand held unit.

Cobber
S'be "buy"
I have an "Eclipse AVN 6000 Navigation System" and found that the only way the disc could be bought was direct from "whereis". Evan the dealers that sold the system could not sell the updated discs.... not sure of the reasoning.

hi myles
when i bought my last vehicle i had the option of having anexpensive inbuilt gps but didnt like the way it's low down in the center of the dash and you have to take your eyes off the road to look at it so i didnt take that option and have a windshield mounted one and it's on the right side in the corner where i can see it with out taking my eyes off the direction of travel much safer i think and updates are readilly availuble
cheers

G'day mazcan,
I went for the expensive option and don’t regret it for a moment. It’s a permanent fixture and sits high on the dash with a bigger screen than I’ve seen on the type that suction cup to your dash or screen. It has great audio instructions so you don’t have to look at the screen at all when driving. The discs are ordered on the net but arrive promptly…. Overnight if you choose.
Regards,
Myles.

Hi Cobber, In my case (Pajero owner) when I bought the car Mitsubishi Motors Aust. Ltd thought it was a great idea to have Telstra Whereis maps that were/are two years old.....the service dept have nothing to do with updates on Sat Nav. You can purchase a "New" disc ....2008 for a 2010 vehicle at approximately $385 or sometimes what the dealer wishes to charge....there is a web site on the net where you can access the code to basically download the latest maps for your navigational requirements/device. In my case I was lucky to "meet" someone on the Pajero club website who downloaded the latest maps onto a disc & sent them to me at no cost....how so nice some people are. Personally the MMAL Sat Nav systems are terrible & not a patch (IMHO) on some of the other makes options & features such as speed camera locations & speed warning alerts to name a few. I have my "other" Navigational aid in the vehicle with all my Ozi Explorer & touring maps on it & it also doubles as a Navigational unit too. I update that device off the Net yearly. Hope this info helps. Monty

If its a Toyota you have to buy it off them.
My boss had a 2003 Sahara with Ver9 of the maps in it IT was $385 to update to ver 14.
I get 18 months maps from Tom Tom for $85.

Graham there are several ways to get it without Toyota.
1)Go to Whereis web site and buy the genuine Toyota version ( it is exactly the same procuct as what you get from the dealer). It is cheaper.
2)Go to a market that sells Copy software ( if you are that way inclined) and get it there. eg Carabean market sells them for about $10
3)You can get it from the internet and burn a DVD for about $2. ( if you are that way inclined again)
I am not condoning the last two methods but all of the above do work.
