Has anyone got a Garmin Colorado 300 hand held GPS? I have trouble deciphering the 'go to' function. I have an east coast Australia chart loaded on it, and am trying to use it out on the GBR out of Mourilyan harbour. When i select 'go to' a way point, a thick pink line appears, and a large triangle. The pink line is obviously the route to take, and the triangle is (i'm assuming) my boat.
During our last trip, my triangle was pointing perpendicular to the pink line. I though that the tip of the triangle was the front of the boat?? As we moved along, the triangle continued to point in a different direction to where we wanted to go. Almost like we were moving sideways along the pink line.
So anyway, if anyone has one of these models or similar, I would love to hear from you to shed some light on the baffling instrument.

Thanks,

John

Hi John

What chart specifically are you using - a G2 or G2 vision or an older bluechart (v9 or 10 ?).

Althought the Colorado can view these marine charts they are a little restricted in function when compared to a dedicated Garmin chart plotter (same with the Nuvi 500) - this may be causing your issues.

Also - where did you source your chart from ?. Often charts like these sourced from torrent files have been through tools to get them to load to Mapsource or to remove unlock codes - often when the unlocker batch file is run it destroys the routing capability of the maps.

Have a go at upgrading your Colorado to the latest firmware as well

Cheers

Was the "pink line" (the Go To line) facing vertically up the screen at the time?

It might be worthwhile playing with the map orientation settings where the options are for "North Up" or "Track Up".

Changing the orientation can be found by the following option:
Shortcuts > Setup > Maps (page 29 of the manual)

Hope that helps,
Andrew

Hi
I think your problem relates to the electronic compass. You need to recalibrate it as it is out of whack. The gps, below certain speeds, uses the electronic compass to define the direction you are travelling (depicted by the point of the triangle), above that certain speed it uses the previous position to determine which direction you are travelling and orientates the triangle accordingly.

So – read the user manual to see how to re-calibrate the compass. There may also be a setting that turns off this slow speed setting, but I’m not sure. Maybe turning of the electronic compass would affect the same result. If using the electronic compass you should recalibrate it on a frequent basis and every time you remove the batteries.

PS your problem does not relate to the chart you are using or track up/course up settings.
