I want to complain about some dull travel
blogs and at the same time point out a great one.
I have read many of the travel
blogs posted in the
blogs section and find them mostly dull and not greatly helpful when traveling. They appear mostly some sort of self glorification of their trip. Certainly I conceed that most will be written to inform friends and family so don't totally shoot me down for being critical.
The URL listed below however I believe is both entertaining and helpful for someone about the repeat the same expedition.
It is the blog of Dick Smith and his wife Pip, on their drive around the world. Pip is being a bit politically correct and I can understand why, so I make allowances.
My hope is that it is not just an inspiration for me but also others and will lead to better travel
blogs.

Ditto...
not all of us are serial bloggers or a literary genius when it comes to writing them. Some have the knack, some don't. Just be grateful they even tried.

"My hope is that it is not just an inspiration for me but also others and will lead to better travel
blogs. "
I agree that a good blog can be inspiring, however sometimes we fail to follow through and deliver a good read. Part of the issue may due to the formatting nature of the internet (html tags etc), rather than the good old diary and photo album combinations.
There are many good
blogs on this site which i would call inspiring, with many of them being "plain" trips to locations many others have been before. IMO It is much easier to develop an interesting blog when travelling through an interesting location, the real challenge is to deliver something worthy of reading after the first paragraph when travelling down to the corner store :)
Thanks for making mention of a good blog, it helps to have a reference blog or three to get us on the right track....BTW how's your blog going Carl? LOL

Carl....
I think the essence of a travel blog is that it expresses the writer’s own experience in a way that conveys you to the same place through the story....
But don’t fall into the trap of confusing what is possibly intended as a travel story with a travel guide that others might use as a ‘blue-print’ in their own travels or read it in a way that you would read a ‘Lonely Planet Guide’ for instance. Your comments suggest you might be doing this, and therefore you are judging them against the criteria of what you might find useful, as distinct from reading it as a story of someone’s experience, which might be all the writer intended.
Speaking to my own
blogs, my intention is to convey a story that readers find interesting, but it is styled completely differently to what I would write if I was intending it as a travel guide that others might find useful.....
But let me say this, the EO site has a vast array of
blogs that range across many topics, including travel, and that have contributors who are as diverse and varied as the topics themselves. What a boring world (and read) it would be if they were all styled in the same way!
Cheers, The Landy

Landy,
your thoughtful and eloquent response squarely hits the nail on the head (as usual).
Adding my two cents worth, certainly from my perspective, some of my
blogs are nothing more than an account of my travels to more pedestrian locations but then they have never been intended to be any more than that. They simply are my own travel journals and their key purpose is to provide a memory prompt for me and now perhaps, by using the EO blog site, an interesting read to others. I also feel that through enrichening the entries with photos and video, the
blogs can certainly convey a flavour of a specific location which many people find both interesting and valuable from a trip planning perspective. The fact that as EO members we have this facility provided encourages this little community to share their travel experiences (amongst other things) and I‘m sure that just about everybody would agree that this is a good thing.
Perhaps I'll have to spice up this years offerings ;-)
Cheers Mick

Totally agree Landy ....
EO is a collection of peoples trips and experiences ..... not a "How To" travel guide.
.... and different people get different experiences - from the same trip.

Carl,
You may
well have a point about some
blogs being a bit on the dull side - however it may have been a bit more diplomatic if you had a few more
blogs up before casting aspersions on others. After all, according to your one blog, you have apparently been on the road for about 9 months now. Surely you have had some adventures and experiences to share, and time to write about them?
As a fan of
blogs, and writer of same I have found that it really is difficult to write with anything that might remotely be called style. When writing about one's own experiences it is very hard to judge if what you have written is interesting or entertaining to others. The thing is to have a go.
Agreed, its great to come upon a
well written, entertaining and informative blog - but to get to that standard of writing you almost have to be an experienced and/or professional writer. Not many on the
forum would meet that standard. As others have said, just be thankful that others make an effort and do the best that they can. There is a lot of wonderful information tucked away in
blogs.
So join other bloggers on here, contribute and do the best you can. If people like it they will often say so, if they don't ,
well they don"t have to read it.
Hope you are enjoying your trip.
Cheers,
Val

Was going to try my first blog from my recent trip to the Top End - think I will keep it to myself now!
I enjoy reading the
blogs however they are written as they are about personal experiences by individuals.

Go for it Jo.
I too love reading others travel
blogs. After all, they are either about
places i have been so i can enjoy the re-visit and even read about features we may have missed, or they are
places i want to go so store the good
places in my memory bank. The only ones i find boring are the day by day diary about what they had for dinner and the like, with no photos.
Mine are my record of the trip (although my diaries have much more detail), but filled with photos, and written in away i hope they will be useful for others to use as a travel guide.

Yes Jo, go for it!
Like Motherhen I enjoy reading about others' trips, especially if they include some good photos - and your photos are beautiful. It certainly brings the memories back.
Also your experience travelling with your daughter will be a guide for others with children of a similar age.
Cheers,
Val

I write
blogs for myself - to go back to and remind myself about some of the detail and for when we travel that way again. If others like to read them that's fine and if they gain some info of use that's even better.
