Hi there.
I am looking at a second hand aluminium canopy to go on my ute tray and there will be a 50 mm overhang either side of the tray when it sits on it.
Does anyone know the NSW RTA rules on side overhang? Will this be legal?
Any other concerns that I should consider before getting it?
Thanks.

I wouldn't think it would be a problem, but then I don't live in NSW.
IMHO as long as it is secured properly and has no sharp projections there shouldn't be any issues BUT if it makes the vehicle overwidth (2.4m plus) you will have problems.

Hope this helps.

The canopy is 1940mm on a 1850 wide tray.

Workhorse

Go to the RTA website for accurate information.

The legal width for a vehicle in NSW must not exceed 2.5 metres.

So you would be within that limit.

Not sure on legality of your situation , BUT if you maybe get some soft trim to put around the edge of the canopy then somehow attach to your car , it may be able to hide the "overhang" and will make it aesthetically smoother and will draw less attention to any overhang that would show without it .
