I know this has nothing to do with 4 wheel driving but,

I was explaining to my young Grandchildren at tea that it was the 150 year anniversary of the Burk and Wills expedition where they travelled from Melbourne to the Gulf of Carpentaria and back to the depot Camp at coopers creek, and that only one man survived John King, and their Great Great Grandfather was a King, and you never know he might be related to you! WELL the questions started coming, why didn’t they use their satellite phone for help, couldn’t the royal Flying Doctor have helped them, why take Camels couldn’t they afford a 4 wheel drive, they should have got onto Twitter or facebook and their friends would have come to look for them, It’s appears that they don’t teach much early Australian History in our Primary Schools now.

Now that is a concern Cobber. Todays political correctness has changed the eduicational curriculum so mmuch that modern day educators have to remain within certain boundaries.

My grandkids know nothing but the bush, as this is where thye have been raised. Unfortunately I have not told them about the early travellers, as I have tried to amalgamate their technology age into their travels. They know they can use GPS and the Internet whilst travelling, and can use satellite phones the same like yours.

There must be some way of integrating the two so that they learn their own history and at the same time maintian their technological skills so prominent these days.

Oh, modern woes.
Why travel overseas, you could travel Australia your entire life, and not see it all.

Good one Ray, but they are 6th Generation Australian's so they would probably say why do we have to have a Permit to travel on our own land!

Ask them what the name of Captains Cooks boat was.
I am getting high school kids saying, "Who's Captain Cook?"

If there not even taught our very basic history, what chance is there of Bourke and Wills, or any other early explorer

I’ve just returned to my desk from a work kitchen discussion where I had made the observation that the first election I voted in was December 1975 after the Kerr dismissal.

I was asked who Kerr was.

During my schooling during the 60s and 70s, I learnt more about English history and the British Empire than I learnt about Australian history. Dunkirk took precedence over Kokoda.

Personally, Eureka, the shearer’s strike of 1891 and the Sunshine Harvester judgement of 1907 are more important Burke and Wills

"It’s appears that they don’t teach much early Australian History in our Primary Schools now."

What do you mean "now"? We never really have taught it. I always love it when people lament the good old days. I was never taught Australian history, Australian politics, Australian social issues or even correct grammatical construction for that matter. During the 70s I was one of the victims of the Chardonnay sipping, liberal hippy leftovers who didn't actually teach anything much of value.

I have two children (one in PS one in HS) and I actually envy the sort of education they are getting. Much more on Australian history, much more on Aboriginal culture and issues and both have a great understanding of our current political climate and issues around the election. My ten year old gave me a really good run down last night on the parties/personalities contesting this election based on school work she is doing. Damn sure I couldn't have done that at 10!

Not all bad nowadays methinks.

Matt.

The first time I was taught grammatical constriction was at Army staff college. We did a bit of Oz history in country SA in the 60's - at least the major white explorers.

Cheers
