Have been looking around for an 80 - 100 Watt portable solar panel kit. It is obvious the rush on fitting solar for domerstic use has pushed the price of panels up.

Have seen 80 Watt kits priced between $1200 to $1500 from a variety of suppliers in Sth QLD.

In an attempt to source something more reasonably priced I came across some from Kulkyne Kampers, located in Red Cliffs, which I believe is near Mildura. The 80 Watt kits are $770!

I would like to know if anyone on the forum has purchased their panel kits and any feedback on the kits as well as service by the supplier, be it good or bad.

Hi Wizard,
I live in Red Cliffs and know Brett and his staff well.
Have purchased 100 watt kit and controller from them and it's been sitting on my roof rack supplying power to a agm battery which runs my Lunar 50litre fridge with ease for over 12 months and some pretty rough roads.
Also purchased the fridge,40litre water tank,Redarc smart battery regulater/charger from them. They also fitted the water tank and redarc for me.
Their service is excellent and they dispatch Australia wide and above all prices are reasonable,
Cheers,
Mary

Thanks fellahs - I'm still around -

"" It is obvious the rush on fitting solar for domerstic use has pushed the price of panels up. ""

Not true for the Kits - The demand for A1 quality solar cells has peaked and manufacturing runs have altered due to demand exceeding supply but so far ( touch wood ) the prices have not risen ...

My next shipment has been delayed 2 weeks for that reason ...

Cheers

Steve

if anything, panels have come down in price. Recognised brands like the Kyocera 135W panel can be purchased for under $1000...

The Kyocera 135W panel uses a Multi-crystalline cell, although of reasonably good efficiency, they are not as efficient as a Mono-crystalline cell of the same physical size.

mmmmm... if you go to http://www.dkasolarcentre.com.au/ an independent site that provides live stats on various solar panels you will see that Kyocera is the most efficient panel on the market

Went as directed to the link shown, yes, Kyocera is high, but definately not the most efficient panel tested, the link I have placed shows this clearly.

Variation between Kyocera and Sunpower
Go to site and click on numbers '10' & '14' for direct comparison.

The Sunpower *Mono-crystalline* cell is clearly shown as the higher output panel (is colored light blue) and a hell of a lot less expensive than Kyocera.
Kyocera make a fantastic panel, but being Multi-crystalline they are not as efficient as a Mono-crystalline using same capacity cell.

It would be good if they tested the more common panels in the same way to give direct comparison for people to gauge the effectiveness of each cell or panel, then there would be no misleading sales information floating around.

just followed the link and guess what - the Kyocera is out performing the Sunpower panel, not just today, but over the last week, the last month and last 12 mnths...

MH,

So what happened about in about May 2010 then??

Looks to my untrained eye that the Sunpower greatly out performed the Kyocera. But throughout the rest of it they were both reasonably close. Sometime the Kyocera was better but others the Sunpower was.

It would be good to have some unbiased opinions from people with knowledge on these types of things rather than smoke and mirrors (which is just like the current election campaign) to promote something that you selling.

Cheers Kev

so your saying the *link I placed* above shows the Kyocera to be out performing the Sunpower panel??
You say your link has the Dark Blue Kyocera line higher than the Light Blue SunPower Line??

No way , the Dark blue Kyocera line only appears higher 8 times in 12 months, maybe just a few %, the other 99% the Sunpower is giving higher output.

If you use *todays* graph it's blatantly obvious as to the higher output panel, because there are less major graphical changes made in a single day.
This will then form part of the history graph in the following months.

But I'm not going to get into an argument how a graph is read, you placed it here, I'm only using it to show the output variation, if the point can't be substantiated, then I would not have used your graph, I say let the readers make their own logical decision.

To clarify the graphical user interface, click between the Sunpower (10) and Kyocera (14) and the variations in output will become evident as they superimpose over each other at your command.

Note:
I'm not connected in any way, with either brand of solar panel shown :)

I don't claim to be an expert, but using the link - which we recommend people do if they want to make an informed decision - and then using normalised output which gives you a true indication of output - you will see that the Kyocera outperforms the Sunpower panels.

I'm not saying that Sunpower aren't a good choice - because in all fairness they are a good panel. But the Kyocera is a little better. And that's why a large number of caravan/RV manufacturers and repairers prefere Kyocera.

Now more interesting *factual* information is available from the site
it actually states in 'words' the following relevant information.

"The average daily energy output of each panel is:
# the Kyocera is rated @ 27.59 Kwh
# the SunPower is rated @ 31.34 kwh"

End of the argument, and now lets get on with life
how you read the graph is obviously very one sided because you sell the Kyocera

the system sizes are as follows,

Kyocera system is: 5.5 Kw rated @ 13.8% efficiency

Sunpower system is: 5.8 Kw rated @ 17.3% efficiency

Now get out the calculator and you do the sums :)

YMMV
