Gob
I think you will find Codan have been around a lot longer and that there are more "old" radios about.
Qmac is another contender.
Cheers Bob

Gob.....I bought a used Barrett 950 system for $1500 plus postage and mucking about....owes me about $1800 by now.....been back to the factory for a warranty job. Runs very
well. I'm in VKS737 and recently joined Radtel too.... I use it a lot and have made a few radphone calls.......seems a winner.
Don't know any modern Codan users...... as you say, they cost quite a bit more but may not offer more. The Barret outback Trav Pack can be picked up retail in
Adelaide for $2995 cash.
Hey Bob.... re the Tvan....... been thinking along those lines..... any comment for a prospective buyer ? Dust sealing ? Set up on uneven ground ?
Shelter for the kitchen (does it have to be the full awning ?)
Tow ball download ? (my rig has a 100k limit - the Tvan looks front heavy and the specs suggest a lot more than 100k in std setup).
Thanks if you have the time.
Get me outa these suburbs !

Just briefly, the Tvan is easy to tow with economy similar to Shipshape on top. Dust has never been a problem. Uneven ground is not a problem either once you level the wheels , I carry a few wood offcuts for extra support in soft sand etc.
Guestimate 80 kg on tow bar possibly more with 3 jerrycans of fuel offset with 2 jerry cans of water and 70ltrs in tank behind the wheels.
We used the annex for the 1st time this weekend and found it better and easier to use than first thought. For shade or light rain the "sail" is a quicker alternative.
Hope this helps
Bob

I have just completed a central aust trip with
HF radio.
We picked up a 2 hand Barrett 550 with 910 auto tune aerial for $1400.
We are happy with the radio and performace.
After travelling I am glad that we got an auto tune. Makes life so much easier.
There are alot of codans out there and people are happy with them.
I think the question is one of the Fridge type arguments Ours is better.
From my use of barrett 550 and codan 8528 and 9350's they all work
well.
As the guy at the radio
shop said to me they are all as good as one another. It only boils down to personal choice and what you want to use it for.
Do you want Phone - Both good
GPS connection - Depends on what the recieving radio type is.
Auto tune Both work
well But work on differant types of tuning.
As for qmac it is a good unit but from what i hear the auto tune can cause a few issues. This is arround the box that has all the aerial tuning gear in it. If it can be mounted inside the car ok but outside it is prone to water and dust getting in.
It has a 600mm lead.
The unit is 50w which will get you everywhere. For the techo it is 3dB less than the others which is bearly percievable.
For my book a barrett 550 910 or codan 9350 would be good.
My main reason is that they are alot easier to get extra channels added.

Thanks Bob re the Tvan advice. Re the comment above on Qmac.....why buy a 50 watt unit ? ....apparently they are about the same price as the Barrett which can peak out around 125 watts ifn the battery is high on volts. Why I am here looking at this screen ?
