200 series suspension

I recently towed a aussie swag off road trailer with my 200 series, which has KDSS suspension. It sat down about 4 to 5 inches in the bum. I enquired about putting air bags in and was told that there is a 20% chance that the KDSS will compensate for the air bags and may lean over to one side by a few inches.
Toyota have a pump available (only 1 in Australia) to re adjust this issue. But it comes at a cost of approx $200.00.
I find this unacceptable, as this car should be able to handle a little old camper. After all I purchased it for a TOW vehicle.
Has anyone else had this problem with their 200 series?

Hi My brother has a Sahara with KDSS and tows a van with around 350kg ball weight. We fitted Poyair bags and he has been using them for about 18 mths without any problems. I think he runs about 5lb empty and 30lb loaded with even pressures each side. Regards,Bob

Ossie

Polyairs etc will be fine.

Whoever told you got mixed up. If you get the suspension upgrade sometimes ( 5%??) they will lean up to 150 - 20mm ( not up to 2 inches). There are several procedures to fix this froim a simple 2 minute bleed, to using the machine you refer to. Most dealers will have this by now. ( there was originally one about 18 months ago)

I put in ARB suspension in my KDSS equipped 200 GXL and now have very little bum squat - unlike with the factory suspension. It also gives a handy 3" front lift and 1" rear lift, great for the off-road too ;)

However, I have purchased airbags and will install them shortly, currently sitting in my workshop ready for installation. Main reason for the airbags is i have sold my Camprite and now have a Quantum van, which I expect to put a heavier load on the towbar.

Cheers

My 200 with KDSS has done 60k+ and all of it towing either a van or an Aussie Swag. I upgraded suspension from new and have airbags.

Towing has been no problem and I don't use the airbags.

As the Captain said if you have a sideways level problem it may just require a bleed adjustment.

Very happy with how the suspension holds up. Putting the van on lowers the back about 3cm

Hi Ossie72,

I've just completed Flinders Ranges (SkyTrek etc), Lake Eyre, Strezlecki Track, Merty Merty, Camerons Corner then across to NSW coastal parks (incl 4WD access to Pebbly Beach etc) with a 200 with uprated OME rear springs and new shocks, towing an AOR camper. No issues, no sag.

hi
i find it hard to believe that after all these years and model changes to toyota's given that the toyota is renown as being one
of the best tow vehicles

and even with the new you bute kdsssuspension

the the 2oo series still isnt good enough to tow a heavy van without some after market add ons

just when are the japs going to come to aus and do some real research into this ongoing towing weig/carrying problem that seems to plague every vehicle

they would then have the altimate vehicle instead of selling a partly capable vehicle as it continues to be

how hard would it be for them to come and research what australias after market supplies have already found out with the many systems a/m availuble
?????? cheers

Yeah seriously, how silly of them to sell them all setup the way 90% of the owners will use them.

Mazcan, KDSS is an sway control mechanisim, and doesn't have anything to do with towing capacity.

hi boobook
i dont profess to know everything but imho a good sway control system must be a positive aid to it's towing ability in the total package

but my basic point in my thread if you'd care to re-read it was-

that even after paying the premiun to buy what is reknown to be one of the best heavy duty tow vehicles

its suspension still isnt up to a satisfacty standard required to carry and tow without modifications from seemingly day 1 to the satisfaction of the owners who wish to tow what the power/transmission is capable of

and yes i am aware that this is the case with many other brands of vehicles as well
i personelly dont think the japs take a seriously enough view of the australian market to be bothered with supplying an altimate suspension as standard
cheers

Mazcan I did reread your post then read what you put when you quoted yourself. They are different and you left out the KDSS bit.

You don't you reread you post rather than rewriting it.

It may not be what you meant......but it is what you said ( in the first post but not where you quote youreself.)
