has anyone had any experience with renting thier RV into one of the private rental firms or taken on a private rental them selves??

what was your experience?
did everything go to plan?
was there any hold-ups from the rental firm?
did the client look after the vehicle?

i would really appreciate anyone's response...

Go along to a hire company and see what they do. They have it pretty well covered and when someone damages a vehicle they pay.

You will learn all the tricks you need to know to allow you to rent a vehicle. Just a couple are blown tyre hirer pays, underbody damage no insurance, broken windscreen hirer pays.
Mate runs a rental firm, you would be surprised at the amount of damage the vehicles sustain from drowned 4wds to vehicles coming back with worn out tires and body damage. Hire vehicles do great burnouts and are faster than a V8 supercar.

Have a good one

I work for a car rental Co, and their is no way that I would let one of our clients near my 4wd. We do have some very good regular customers, BUT the ones that hire 4wds seem to thrash them. I have yet to see a customer get charged for a windscreen or flat tyre.
The other thing to consider hire Cos buy at huge discounts often cheaper then dealer wholesale, so mostly prefer to buy new.
Good luck anyway Pete

many thanks for your input fellas,

i would like to narrow the field of vehicles down and gauge you opinion...

what if the vehicle was something like a 4 tonne 4x4 motorhome made up of easily and cheaply attainable parts but there where severe restrictions on it's use, where it could go and limited to drivers 40+?

i suppose there are many industry condition one must meet to offer a vehicle as such...

If you cant afford to lose it , its not for you
Cheap parts and 4 tonne 4wd vehicles dont go together.

It takes some real experience to keep a big offroad vehicle like that out of trouble offroad
Dont let the over 40s fool you. They can run it into a ditch or cook an engine as easy as the youngins.

One of the big headaches with 4wd hire vehicles is not being able to air down the tyres.
Tyre deflation takes enormous strain off the engine and driveline but no hire company seems to encourage it.

The regular players in this game have deep pockets and debt collectors who track you down ruthlessly.
They also offload their vehicle with low klms to avoid the high maintenance cost of aging hire vehicles

Your right Ross, the weight, wear, tear and critical need for skill isnt something i took lightly when i bought it...and it would be hard pressed for a hirer to accept it... Trying to explain to them the why's as to they wernt allowed to use the 4x4 for recreational four-wheel-driving would be just too hard...

the regular players must have nighmares with people's expectations...

Our 4bys are not supposed to go off road either but they do. We had a beautifull Prado once that was only driven by a manager that had been detailed etc for sale. A young pretty lass come in several times asking if she could hire it and the boss said sorry no. Anyway she stated she just wanted to do a weeks gentle touring out to Hillend, Jenolan caves etc.
So he gave in and said ok.
When it was returned she took it to our Lithgow office who had never seen it before(very clever on her part). I went down to pick it up and nearly died when I seen it. The whole front was stone chipped, the tyres where worn out, and coming home I could not see through the Windsreen, which no amount of cleaning could fix. When I took it to windsreen bloke he said he had only ever seen one other windsreen so abraded by fine gravel. She also had covered 10000ks.
Turns out she had gone to Lake Eyre in a convoy. Must have been siting fair up someones rear all the way.
The worst thing was we had a client who was eagerly waiting to buy it, just waiting on money to come through. The repair cost was over $1000, which the boss wore. Stone chipes tyres etc are fair wear and tear.
So be carefull.
Cheers Pete

Rb we where not their but the windsreen and the whole front of the Prado was sand blasted, so that is the only reason I can think of. City driver afraid of getting lost, dont laugh we had a new excity ferry driver who was siting 20feet off my tail on a dirt road. When I pulled up and got up him his excuse was the above. Unbelievable you only had to follow the dust moron.
Cheers Pete

If you do rent, read the insurance small print VERY carefully.
I rented a car in Melb recently and paid extra insurance to bring the outrageous excess down to $0. Someone backed into the driver's door, and I was slugged for the lot. They reckoned that because I didn't get the number of the other person, it was a "single-car" accident (even tho it was obviously done by another car). The irony of all this is that if I hadn't taken out the extra cover, and got the person's number, I would have been able to claim the damages anyway.
cheers,
Gerry

Damn! Getting too old! Sorry about that, should have read it properly!
Perhaps I'm still so miffed about that rental company.

But having seen the speeds that rented campervans travel on the Gibb River Road in the Kimberley, I wouldn't be renting my van out in a fit....

but still a good point Jok... having a look at the fine-print would have given a good indication of some of the pittfals

On another hand I always look after my rentals but I pay as much in insurance then the car normaly at the end of the day those who do the right thing should be rewarded and those who don't should pay the big insurance.
