I'm looking at getting a new Dual Cab Ute but can't decide what to get. The new Navara ST-X series 4 sounds good with the improved power and fuel economy, but i didn't like the ground clearance on my last one.
Maybe I should wait to see the reviews on what VW's Amarok is like. Again, it's fuel economy is reported to be very good.
The Hilux fuel economy is also good, but the interior could be better.

Fuel economy, ground clearance and price are very important to me. Anything over 11L/100km I'll probably not look at, I won't pay over 50k and I don't want to have to put a lift kit in after.

I'd appreciate anyone's feedback.

The Triton has won a few awards and might be worth a look.

Or buy a wagon and treat the back like a ute, that's what I do, just have to clean it out every now and again.

Geoff,

I don't worry about having to clean out the back of my 105 Series Landcruiser ;)
Best Dual Cab you can get I reckon :)

Well you won't but a STX for less than 50k and the STX has soft suspension to allow a car like ride. Many people fit air bags to get the level ride height with a decent load in the back. VW overall have very poor service facilities outside the metro area. They make great cars but badly need a much better national service facilities outside metro area if they ever want to be considered other than a niche market.

Colorado - Isuzu seem on the surface have the best economy--load-$ value and importantly for bush work have 16" tires rather than expensive 17' plus tires.

Overall seems to me that the Mitsubishi is possibly th best current pick. Best Gear box, most room inside and best warranty. But has 17" wheels on "luxury" vehicle.

I don't own any these utes and probably never will. I think you need to expand your use for the vehicle before anybody can give you any detailed advice.

Gidday

I have a Ford Ranger and i reckon it and its Mazda BT50 twin probably offer the best value for money. They are the oldest design inside of the current crop so probably lack the bells and whistles of the others but claimed power/torque and towing ability are pretty much the same as the rivals, though the upgraded Nissan has more power. A lot seem to people like the Triton though the looks are polarising and i read in another place that one Triton owner with the new 2.5 engine and auto trans wasn't impressed when towing his camper.

Cheers

After a serious crash, I went for the highest safety rating - The Triton GLR dual cab auto with side & curtain airbags - Fuel economy is pretty good (9.0L/100km country//10.5 all city driving). Quite a few extras and very good seating for all adult passengers (front & rear).

I looked at them all and couldn't go past the Triton GLX-R for bang for the buck.

Not to be blowing the wind up Navaras sails, but the new series 4 now comes with curtin airbags aswell. It's fuel economy is reported to be 8.5L/100km. I'm waiting for more reviews before i make up my mind though.

I'm not a fan of the Triton's looks, but everyone is different.

If you want someone to agree that you should buy a Nissan I would be very happy to offer my support and i think your making a good choice.

I personally don't like Nissans in general as i think they are made very cheaply compared to the Toyota equivalent.

I would honestly suggest to have a look at a 4 year old Navara and compare it to a hilux, the trim seems to wear a lot better and the fit and Finnish is far superior against the Navara.

In all our outback travels we have never seen a Navara D40 out there, D22's yes a few....thats no joke.

What don't you like about the Hilux interior?

Any vehicle these days that is going to see any serious off roading will need a lift kit.

Again I would stick to the Nissan....why because you have made your mind up and anything else you buy you will not like and wish you bought the Nissan.

Hi olcoolone, thanks for your input. I have had my old Navara D40 out there a few times and never had a problem, so i guess that has swayed me a bit. The hilux interior is hard to keep clean with the bumpy/rough dash, unless they have changed it now. Other than that i can't find a fault with Hilux.
You are right about all vehicles needing lift kits now days. The manufactures are catering for the city people these days and don't consider the needs of us out in the bush.

Thanks again.

We have done a lot of serious off roading and find the interior easy to keep clean, wipe the dash over with a soft damp cloth and it comes up trumps....including a few dust storms.

We see all different vehicles in our workshop and some are clean and others aren't, it comes down to how well you want it clean.

Regarding needing a lift kit, most (90%+) 4x4's of today are only ever driven on bitumen, this is why most manufactures design there vehicles for better on road comfort and driving behavior.

It comes down to do we build a 4x4 to suit less then 10% of buyers or do we build it for the 90% of buyers.

We have been looking at a range of new 4x4's to replace our current model Hilux and we are finding it hard to find anything as good in comfort, build quality, feel and fit and finish....we might have to go Hilux again.

I'm not bias about brands as we buy vehicles based on what we want and expect, but once you have had a Toyota it's hard not to pick faults with others.

Toyota are a frustrating bunch, they have a tendency not to follow others brands and competition and charge a premium for it, Toyota works on the principal of if you don't like don't buy it and if you do like it pay the price.

One thing Toyota has going for it is quality and reliability, I don't mean little things like minor engine problems but chassis and components.

Show us your bonnet catch...... what about firewall cracks, door handles, burnt engine wiring loom?

Seriously I think you are the first d40 owner I've found that's even thinking about going back for more punishment by Nissan.

Hi gbc,

I had mine for 3 years from new and never had any of these problems. Travelled over some pretty rough country as well. Overall, I found the D40 very reliable.

Anyway, what vehicle doesn't come with it's gremlins these days. Weather you are unlucky to have owned a 'bad one' or it's been a genuine problem, it always attracts more attention than the ones that have preformed without a flaw.

Would you like some links to whole websites full of users with problems? Yours didn't get recalled for the bonnet catch ute tray cable fix? Just my opinion, but there's more reliable utes around.
