In understand the Rabbit Flat is now closed - or if not will be soon. When we went through in 2008, we were told that Rabbit Flat was open seven days, not the usually two or three, during tourist season. However all was locked and not sign of life when we got there.

This means no fuel between Halls Creek and Yuendumu Community, with the Tilmouth Wells service station a little way further towards Alice Springs.

Isn't 2008 a bit remote when the poster was asking for up to date information? And BTW what about Billiluna?

Hi Teege

No, it seems nothing has changed at present, thanks to Wayne's clarification.

Thanks for adding the suggestion of Billiluna. Thread 78390 discusses this.

Hi Motherhen

Now we are in my backyard, an area, probably the only area, that I know like the back of my hand. You are quite correct in what you have said. It was me who advised people that Bruce and Jacqui are closing their roadhouse on 31st December this year,

Cheers

PS the linked article showing beside you post lists Rabbit Flats as well as Yuendumu and Tilmouth. Someone may have up to date details about Rabbit Flats.

tam,

there is plenty on the net and the best place is right here.

Tanami Track

Rabbit Flat is still open, but will close for good on December 31 2010.

Thanks for the clarification Wayne. Meanwhile, don't count on it being open the day you need it! And be prepared to pay the price of the remoteness.

Hi Tam16

I live, full time and permanently, with my wife (she is Aboriginal) at Mulan, which ius about an hour from the Tanami. We drive it ALL the time.

There are three large communities that you can get fuel from, being Yuendemu, Balgo and Billiluna, and there is also Rabbit Flats, which is closing in December this year.

The Granites Mine willalways help a stranded traveller, they are near Rabbit Flats, and the Groundrush Mill, near the Lajamanu turn off, will also help out if required. Both will also help with tyre repairs.

Thye cost of fuel is anywhwre between $2-50 and $3-00 a litre at the communities, though cheaper in Yuendemu, and the mines you have to normally make arrangements for a Purchase Order from somewhere else, but they will not leave you stranded.

Tyhe road from ALice Springs to the NT / WA border is quite reasonable, but from the NT border through to Sturt Creek, near Billiluna is nothing short of disgraceful.

Bwteen Billiluna and the Bitumen near Halls Creek you have Ruby Plains Station, and they are alwasy ver helpful as well. The Managers name there is Merv, and he is extremely knowldegeable about the area.

I do hope this could be of some help to you.

Cheers

We went through there in early june this year. Rabbit flat was closing in december this year, the price of deisel was $2.80 a litre. From memory there were 2 other places you could buy fuel, the camps 5 book has all that info, worth having a copy of that. Best bet is to take a couple of jerry cans with you.
Cheers.

When we went through in 08 our R&R day at Rabbit flat was one of the high lights of the trip.Took the time to have a yarn with Bruce and he and my brother in law who had not long lost his bladder due to cancer had a great time talking about the area in general. In such a remote spot I felt he offered a great service to those travellers who were "not in a hurry' and the camp site had long drops which were well maintained and clean and not at all sniffy.
I wish him well and the trip will not be the same without the legendry Rabbit Flat Roadhouse,
Cheers,
Mary
