The Tanami Track Feedback

As a dweller at Mulan, for too many years now, I am wondering where some of the above data came from. There are loads of challenges to some of the data, and more fuel stops availaqble than mentioned. The average speed is also something I would very much challenge, as some parts you would be hard pressed to get over 40 KMH without damaging your vehicle.

The Tanami is a dirt highway, with some corrogations, takes a day and a half from Halls Creek to Alice.

It cdertainly is no outback "track" needing to be challenged or defeated.

Hi Andrew

Please read carefully what I wrote. I did not say the track needed challenging, I stated that some of the data required challenging. I was quite clear on that point, and would appreciate people reading what is actually written.

Incidentally, I have, on several occasions when the road has been good, driven from Halls Creek to ALice Springs in one day, about 16 hours actually. That is the kind of thing that I am talking about.

Cheers

Marc, I don't recall quoting you, but merely giving my experience, as you did.

Hi Marc

If you look at your original post, you will see a brief Article Overview on The Tanami Track.

as it says "Although once a notorious 4WD track, it is now a graded dirt highway....."

I'm sure you are correct as you live in the region, but I don't know what you are challenging.

If you are saying that there are errors in Exploroz info, as a member, you can update info in 'Places', David and Michelle are always requesting updated info.

Obviously I have never been there (one day!), but have watched a dvd of those foolish environmental vandals The Gall Boys, pulling a Kedron down the track.

Cheers, Dave

Hi Dave

What I am a bit suspect about is the average speeds, the old data regarding distances, as the road has been changed in several places, and tha fact that it is a "graded highway". The Halls Creek Shire are so laxadative in their grading out here it is not funny. I am sure if someone answers natures call on the road, and they see a wet spot, they close the road because of water.

We have several grader operators here in Mulan, and they have a couple in Balgo, but the Shire will not allow local people to go out and level the road off. That is a highly contentious issue within the communities at the moment, not something anyone else can do anything about.

The speeds they were talking about on the Tanami was also something I founf strange. I would certainly hope that anyone travelling at such speeds on corrugation checks their Drive Shaft nuts and their bell housing nuts, as the vibrations would be astonishing.

I would rather just let the person intending to travel this way know what it is like as the questions come up. The road is constantly changing, and committing to averages on such a road is something I would question. But then, I am just a bushie from this way.

Cheers

Marc

Hi Marc

I think it is best you send your info via feedback to Exploroz, to let them know that the info is incorrect at this time, and get them to update the info via locals ( as you are), or recent travellers.
I'm sure they would regard your input highly.

Regards, Dave

Hi Dave

I actually thought that I had done that. I was surprised to see an article in the threads here, as I did not start a new thread. I must ahve missed a button somewhere, but I will find out somehow.

You would note that the thread is called the Tanami Track Feedback, and that is what I though it was. My mistake.

Thanks for the advice.

Marc,

When submitting any Article Feedback directly below the feedback box is a Visibility "Check Icon" by checking this icon it will only be visible to EO Staff.

I reckon that all the feedback that you have given is great that it is being discussed, on the Forum as it allows readers to pick up on your local knowledge. Which in turn allows them to ask even more questions of the area that you have knowledge in, which IMHO is what is great about EO. Many minds engaging in a common area of interest.

Cheers Kev

Hi Marc,i am just wanting to know if it would be possible to travel the Tanami Track driving a 2wd car as I have noticed that exploreOz say that it is high clearance 4wd only. They also state that for the Sandover Hwy but I have travelled on the Sandover using a 2wd in recent years.I'm in Broome at the moment and will be heading to Halls tomorrow so I would be grateful if I can recieve a quick reply.
Thanks......Mark

Hi Mark

About 50% of the vehicles being driven around the main communties on the Tanami are 2 wd, petrol vehicles.

Yes, it is quite okay, and there is more than sufficient clearance for such a vehicle. The only bad aspect is the terrible currugation.
