Evening readers
I have spent a a bit of time over the last 3 months building up a collection of
Places on Google Earth. I have mapped a lot of the High Country in NSW and Victoria and can waste plenty of time "driving" the tracks from my desk and dreaming of my next 4WD journey.

Do any of you computer whizzes know if I can upload these
places to my Magellan Xplorist?
Google Earth seems happy to import waypoints from the GPS, but can I send them the other way?
I'm not sure where on my computer the
places are saved and what format they are in. (?.kml)

Hi
Oziexplorer may be your best path. Current version allows you to view GE directly, save waypoints and tracks and send data straight to your explorists gps. Demo version doesnt allow this so a few bucks involved.
Cheers

By jingoes, I've lost my mind (been a while since I used a Magellan)
Try Magellans VantagePoint - does the job (import kml then export to eXplorist)
VantagePoint Download

If you want to use Google Earth maps in Oziexplorer then a program called Googleozi does a brilliant job.

Hi
Mobile Atlas Creator is better
Mobile Atlas Creator
though we have gone off topic. You can view Google Earth in Oziexplorer anyway (if you have internet). Question relatated to exporting kml files to eXplorist Xl.
Cheers

I can view google earth in oziexplorer? Would you mind pointing out where this is?
I've seen this "Now includes support for Google Earth within OziExplorer. There is a link to the OziExplorer Google Earth page (on the OziExplorer page) where the .map file can be downloaded." in the help file but never could figure out where this "oziexplorer page" is.

Thanks. I eventually found it. As with most things on that website you almost need a GPS to navigate around it.

Hi Michael
As the resident guru has already mentioned, GE exports in .KML format, so to send
places, waypoints etc to your gps, the file needs to be converted to .GPX
Babelfish is apparently a good file converter. Have a look at the following link for a very simple explanation and 'walk through' of how to do the job.
GE to GPS

...you can't use GPX files in an eXplorist XL so converting from kml to gpx still results in an unuseable file...but as mentioned GPSBABEL will convert into many formats including that required by the Explorist so we are still on the right path.
The Magellan VantagePoint program I mentioned actually has GPSBABEL incorporated into it so usng this may or may not be eassier than just straight GPSBABEL. I however, do not find VantagePoint very user friendly and a bit confusing to use, plus its slows my computer down a bit...but it does the job.
Cheers

If you save all your required Google Earth KMZ files to a folder on the PC you can use this website to convert them to what ever you need, Garmin, Magellan etc. you will probably have to register on the website to use the conversion program.

Hi
Doesnt appear to have any utilities to convert KML to Magellan eXplorist format though (or any Magellan format actually)...
well not that I can see. Can you be more specific about which one you are talking about (with respect to original question that is)?...or is you suggestion just a generalised one?
Cheers

Hi
Choice of a suitable GPS for any one person should include an assessment of a wide range of factors. Ability to create POIs using the website you posted maybe one thing to take into consideration but I dont think it holds much weight on its own. No doubt Garmin in general produce a good range of units that suit many peoples needs but they arent the best choice in all circumstances.
Cheers

There was a really good explanation written by a member in thread 66253 in relation to Google and Oziexplorer.....might be worth a read.
