Hi all,
Due to the road closures and prediction of more rain we are postponing our trip to the Cooper and going to The Blue Mountains instead around the 15th Sept. I have been searching for information on the Bridal track (best spot to
camp). It seems to have a section that is not too good for towing the camper on (narrow). We will be coming from
Bathurst and cant quite pin point the start of it. Also where would be a good safe base to set up
camp for a couple of days to sight see around
Lithgow and
Katoomba, 4x4
park or something like that? Prefer not a caravan
park but if we have to we will. Thinking of travelling back up north through
Wisemans ferry . Is there a old road/ track in that area with old bridges and history stuff like that. I remember seeing a doco years ago and there was a ferry near it.
We are into History and 4x4 driving with camper three tin lids 7,9 & 11 so any hints on the area would be valuable.
Cheers
Sharon

That would be the convict road from
wisemans ferry to
bucketty that is walking track
only. Take the ferry to the north side of the river turn left and its about two kms
to the start of the walking track. Head north to
St albans ,
Mogo Creek ,
Bucketty and on to
Wollombi more history along that road.

Thanks Stephen, I finally found info about it. I recon it must have been a Leyland bros doc as they drove on it.

I googled maps "The Bridal Track" found the start but still would be interested in the narrow section and
camp spot. Why I ask this is when we went to
Vic High country we booked into a caravan
park for a couple of days set up
camp only to find 40ks up the road beautiful river side
camping.

Believe the section of road where caravans are not allowed is called
Monaghans Bluff.
Having said that, according to this post on Overlander, the track could be blocked.

The bridal track last monday was closed at
the bluff due to a rock slide and coming from
hill end was impassable at the caausway due to flooding. I suggest you look up the number for the
royal hotel at
hill end and ring them before you go.

Their is still access to the river before
the bluff in a few spots.
You could also use Lake Lyel as a Base for a few days, showers etc on the western side of the lake.

We have stayed at
Katoomba Fall Caravan
Park and love it ( I am also not a fan of CVparks). Plenty of room to spread out and ideal as a base
camp to explore the area. It's a council
park and if you don't want power you can often have one corner to yourself. Worth a look

It is still rain ing here in
Bathurst, but hopefully will have stopped by the time you get here.
I can recoomend a few
places, which we do as day trips:
Gardens of Stone National
Park (nth of
Lithgow)
Turon Rover National
Park (near
Capertee north of
Lithgow)
Jenolan
State Forest (
camping areas along 4Wd track section of 6 foot track)
Kanangra Boyd National
Park (
Boyd River campground or Ding Dell or Mout Werong (maybe in Blue Mtns NP, but close by)
Abercrombie Roiver Nataional
Park (south of
Oberon) some interesting old stockmans huts, yards etc
The Bridal Track is
well sign posted, head to Eglinton and follow the signs.
Camping along the River is fine, but certainly would not recommend attempting to tow van pas
the Bluff. A French exchange student we had one, driving the Track (without caravan), asked how many people die on the road every year. There is a
good campsite accesses from the
Hill End side of Track. The 4WD action ute comparision was conducted there last year.
If you want some more details, feel free to send me a message.

You can also
camp at Bungelboori which is in the Frestry area north of
Lithgow. It is only about 15 min to
the Lost City and used to have
tank water and pitt
toilets.
Camping there would provide good access to
the Gardens of Stone NP and the
Glow Worm Tunnel which is interesting and a fun thing to do, especially with kids. Apart form that though this
camp site is pretty remote.
Head north out of
Lithgow toward
the Gardens of Stone NP. Or you can take the Bell Rd and turn in at the Zig Zag Railway where you could spend a couple of hours and have a pleasant ride on the old steam train.
