Who does insure soft floor campers?(The ones that sit on a box trailer)
I have been in contact with the major insurance companies and they all want serial numbers, model, year etc. Being of the canvas type, none of this is on it, and being bought second hand, I have no idea. The trailer itself is covered while attached to car, but not if parked and unattached.
Any ideas? I suggested letting them look at it either setup or photo, but they did not want to do that. (obviously don't want my money)

Hi SDG,
When we had our soft ,we insured it with MHIA.
Reasonably priced, never had to make a claim
We had to email them pictures of the setup & list everything, which wasn't a problem.

Hi,
CIL insurance is the main insurer of caravans and camper trailers (including tent camper trailers - this is what you have).

By law, the camper should have a VIN number and model description on the Rego Papers / Rego Certificate and a compliance plate on the trailer itself.

You should use these when discussing insurance with an insurance company as this uniquely identifies the camper trailer for insurance purposes.

Cheers,
Mal

Hi SDG and other campers

I suggest all members with campers of any type with canvas walls closely check the PDS that comes with your insurance policy.
I have a Goldstream camper and the only insurance company that would confirm that they would cover loss or theft from a soft walled or canvas camper was NRMA.

For example the CIL insurance, which is commonly cited as the specialty caravan insurance company, clearly states on page 43 of the PDS of their Secure Caravan Insurance Product...

"We will not pay for:...

theft or attempted theft from your caravan or your annexe if:
it does not have hard walls, or
it is not securely locked, or
there is no physical evidence of forcible
and violent entry."

CIL defines Hard walls as..

“hard walls” means a wall that is not made of
canvas, vinyl or similar materials."

You may find your insurance company has similar conditions and could reject a claim for loss from a camper.

Check your PDS now not later.

HI Jimbo- I guess when you look at it, from an insurers point of view- this is not an unreasonable exclusion. The annex and tent area of a camper are not secure with regards to theft. Anything particularly expensive would need to be locked into the trailer itself, or in the car. Large expensive items such as generators and fridges may need other locking devices. There maybe companies out there that would provide cover for the tent/annexe area- but I'm sure it would come at a hefty cost. doc.
