About to leave to head around Australia and have found that RACQ won't cover any contents in the van over $500 per claim. What do other people do for insurance, to cover the contents in their van?
RACQ's words were "go and see a broker"!

Hi Shane
NRMA insures contents for $1000 automatically with the caravan insurance and up to $5000 for an extra premium.
If you have a claim you must produce receipts for all items claimed.
And they do pay up.
Regards
Ted

We are about to do the same thing and are using APIA for our car and caravan, however you do have to be over 50 and not working full time.

It depends on whether you still own a house or not.
When we started we were insured with Suncorp who said no way for contents if you dont own a house.
If you do you can insure contents anywhere in Australia for an extra premium as an extension of your house insurance.
We went to alliance insurance brokers who tailored a policy for us
However as they have changed underwriters they will no longer do that.
Its the not owning a house bit that causes the trouble.
Suncorp would insure stuff if it was in the van or the annexe which wasnt lockable but not if I took anything in the lockable and alarmed car
Go figure the logic in that.
We have $10,000 worth of contents insurance on the stuff we take on holiday at present.

Elders is who we went through when we had the van because of the contents.

Hi Shane
We use an Elders Insurance Broker (this year covered with QBE) for our whole package. As we still have our house (and family reside in it while we are away which solves another insurance dilemma), our contents are covered up to a certain percentage of the household cover Australia wide.

Hi Shane
It’s not just a problem for contents – you also need to cover unsecured portable items located outside the van when you are not in attendance or at night.
Motor Vehicle Insurers don’t usually insure portable items.
My Caravan is insured with a motor vehicle insurer but its portable items are under the house insurance.
My Engel, Waeco, Computer, Solar Panels and Gen set are insured under my house insurance as portable items. They are covered when they are not secured, inside or outside my caravan or motor vehicle. Don’t assume this coverage is universal – check with your insurance company first.

Hi Shanegu6,
Went through the whole before we left in May this year. As we had sold our house none of the 'usual' companies wanted to know about it, as we couldn't link it to our contents insurance. We spoke to CIL at the
Perth Caravan and
camping show and found them to be best suited for us, as we are in our 40's and not eligible for APIA. We also have 2 laptops, 2 cameras, 4 bicycles, various electronic devices and all the general
camping goods also and all are covered. If you have anything in excess of what they cover, you just need to itemise it with them and they cover a fair bit. We took extra cover and it cost us about $80 more for the year.
Hope it helps, Michelle

Hi All,
We also have CIL on our camper trailer. They were the only ones that would cover contents in the tent and outside the camper when set up without having to chain absolutley everything to the camper. They also were the only ones we could find to cover the camper if we went off road, go through a
creek (that is not flooded & not salt
water etc... blah blah blah), and would cover us if we happened to get stuck near a cyclone etc.
I think our fees are $700 per year for $48000 new replacement cost + $7000 extra contents such as generator, engel, etc.
We did go through a broker and this is their best offer and even they said its the best you can get coverage wise.
CIL is a product of suncorp, but even the suncorp cover is not as good as the CIL cover.
Hope it helps.

Also....most would not cover the awning/annexe and walls etc
And none of the others would cover table and chairs or stoves - not even things inside your tent even if it was locked.
CIL do.
