I use Traks4Aus, but not as a stand alone; I use it along with the other maps. Traks4 has some info the others don't and vice versa. It will also depend on the area you want the maps for. Some areas are better than others. Oztoppo is the commercial version of tracks4 and has more on it. Hope this helps.

to my knowledge tracks4 has not been updated for years... could be wrong... if someone has info on that and can point to updates and where to get them, I'd be happy to hear from them.

Hi
Always difficult to provide advice on such matters as peoples needs/expectations vary considerably. They (T4A maps) are free so apart from time you have nothing to lose by trying them yourself. T4A and the similar shonkymaps are based on 250K data so finer detail (eg streets) will be lacking compared to Garmins Austopo and Oztopo (though some additional tracks have been added to T4A). Garmins Austopo is also routable, T4A and shonkymaps are not. Some people find them handy none the less.
Also worth having a look at is OSM Australia maps - also free - good detail in some areas, lacking in others.
Cheers
Greg

Good to see the reference to OSM Greg. I started to update some of
my home area which helps get some of the detail. Anyone with a reasonable quality GPS can save their tracks and improve the data. Hence the name Open Street Maps.

Unfortunately Oz Troppo is not auto routable which is a real pain because this is the only way to get around the visibility issue with Garmin type maps in which when you zoom out to much track detail is lost in the overlay priorty system.

Hi Trouper
I use T4A and Shonky maps, (among others) they are both free, one is better in some area's and vice vera.
If you don't want to download them, you can buy a dvd for $5 with T4A, Shonky, Contours Aust, OSM and heaps of other goodies from
here.
Cheers
