Hi guys,

I am new to this site and was wondering if anyone can offer me advise on life in Exmouth WA.
My wife is a newly qualified primary school teacher so we are considering doing a couple of years in the country and are considering Exmouth as one of our preferences.
I am a self employed painter decorator but don't mind a change of job depending on what's around.
We enjoy bushwalking, camping and outdoor living.
We don't have kids yet so maybe now is the right time to head out of Perth for a couple of years?

Any advise or insights into the area would be greatfully recieved!

Thanks

Hope they supply a house with the job as rental's / buying is pretty expensive in Exmouth, lots of fishing etc to do there

As mentioned above - if it comes with a house and you can see yourself in a rusty old landcruiser dragging dingy down the beach each weekend - go for it.

You may as well charge a squillion dollars an hour like the rest of the tradies in town!

It's a dump. I lived there from 1967 to 1975 and it was a great place. I went back for a visist in the last week of July and left the next morning. I had planned to stay a week.
I could not get out of there quick enough. Try Carnarvon. Clean tidy and livable.

Gidday Goosey i have lived in Exmouth for the last 9 years, the only way u could survive here is to be in a flyin flyout situation, thats to live comfortably, as for ur wife being a school teacher u would have to enquire at the local school, the cost of living here is expensive i have seen so many people come here with big ideas and leave after their first summer here, the realty of the situation here sinks in, there is plenty of fishing here and lots of camping.

One thing i have noticed in my time here is the type of people moving here not the friendly place it use to be, i stick to myself and enjoy my own company, rent is expensive and buying a house here is prohibitive, i have just returned home after 9 weeks away and i dont think a house has sold, appears very quiet on that front.

I am only here because i get subsidised rent with the job i have here in town and also recieve a military pension, so there many things to consider if u move here, there is really no competition in regards to business's here so they charge wot they like, i buy a lot of things now via the internet.

If you need to know anything else just ask i can help there, to be honest as a place to stay mainly for a holiday it is overrated in my opinion.

Cheers

If she can get a job there - take it!! I lived there for about 6 years and loved it. GEHA housing will be supplied at a subsidised rate, and there is plenty of fishing / camping / bushwalking etc to do in the surrounding area. However, I would recommend trying Karratha / Dampier (or even Roebourne and living in Karratha and car pooling as most Primary School Teachers there do) as she probably has more of a chance of getting a job (a lot more primary schools), you still get subsidised GEHA housing, and you have a heaps better chance of getting a job earning over 100k per year within the first few weeks - and living expenses are a lot cheaper there than Exmouth.... There is also a lot more camping, four-wheel driving, fishing etc options in the areas surrounding Karratha (I was there for about 7 years as a high school teacher). Then, there is also Broome, Port Hedland, One Arm Point.......

Yes - do it BEFORE kids!!

Have fun!!

Thanks guys for your taking the time out to give some advice, it's really appreciated! it is great to have the views of people who know a bit about the area! you tend to go into these things a bit blind otherwise! We sure do have plenty to consider now.

Cheers
