Hi all
We are planning on holidaying in south Australia for a minimum of 3 weeks at Christmas time, if we have not left bookings to late visiting both the
York and Eyre Peninsulas.
We have visited the
Fleurieu Peninsula and
Kangaroo Island and now want to visit some more of South Australia keeping close to the beaches durring summer.
We have a 21ft caravan so are looking for nice or recommended caravan parks that cater
well for kids aged 3,8,9 years,we enjoy a more natural environment, including beaches national parks four wheel driving and early history rather than all theme parks etc.
We are thinking of spending a week on the
Yorke Peninsula and taking day trips from a chosen
park, perhaps at Yorketown and then moving on to the Eyre Peninsula for two weeks perhaps staying at
Port Lincoln for a week and then moving on to
Streaky Bay or
Ceduna.
My question to any one who has good knowledge of these areas is, where would you stay which parks would you recommend, and what is a must see, also when do you think the Vincent Gulf ferry will be operational again.
regards andy

Hi Andy,
I live in the area and would suggest the following. For Caravan Parks either the
Port Lincoln Caravan Park at North Shields (its right on
the beach) 10 k's north of
Port Lincoln or the
Coffin Bay Caravan
park. CB is probably booked out but NS may have openings, but I would not leave it too long. There are two main NP's in the area
Lincoln National Park and
Coffin Bay National Park. Both have easy access through to 4wd only tracks and wilderness areas, excellent fishing and beaches.
At Christmas Streaky and
Ceduna will be damed Hot and not as much to see in my opinion at that time of year.
As for the ferry, I doubt it and if it is running it is (or at least was) expensive for a caravan. The old prices were $25 per head, car $120ish and same for van so you would be looking at over $300 to save maybe 1-1/2 hours in time, the crossing was 1.5 hours plus being there at least 1/2 hour before so 2+ hours where as the drive is 3-3.5 hours. If the weather is not good then expect to have seasick kids, it gets a bit lumpy in the middle of the gulf.

I agree with Jeff about the ferry. It sounds like Jeff is on the Eyre Peninsula, whilst I live at Kadina on the YP.
Xmas holidays is always busy at
the beach-side c'van parks. You may be better off trying to book into the Minlaton c/
park....it is not a long drive to anywhere from Minlaton; except maybe Marion Bay/Innes NP ;-(
There are no theme parks or anything "fancy" about the c/parks here; they all just cater for
the beach goers.
Hope you have a great trip.

Hello Andy
Just wanted to add my 2 cents worth. The EP is a great spot with Coffin and Lincoln National Parks offering some fantastic beach destinations (Wanna Sandhills,
Gunyah Beach, Seven Mile Meach and McLaren Poin to name a few)....the
Coffin Bay Caravan
Park will let you do most of this by day trippng..............but don't discount the West Coast part of the Eyre Peninsula!.
It can be hot but it is summer and that can be the case anywhere on the EP. The coast line aorund
Ceduna offers some terrific locations...Davenport
Creek,
Point Bell, Catcus Beach (the the famous surf breaks of Catcus,
Caves and Castles),
Point Brown,
Rocky Point and
Fowlers Bay. Shelley Beach Caravan
Park in
Ceduna is probably the pick of the parks in
Ceduna.
If you are travelling up the West Coast from
Coffin Bay make sure you call into Pt Drummond and spend a couple of days at
Elliston and Streaky.
Enjoy...it's a magic part of SA.
Cheers
John

The caravan parks are fairly full this time of year but you should find something.
Port Hughes Caravan
Park is one of the larger ones and is by a sheltered beach so is excellent for younger children. If you prefer to be closer to Innes National
Park then any of the following parks will be closer to
the beach than Yorketown.
I grew up on
Yorke Peninsula so I haven't stayed in the parks but know he area
