I have a wonderful company that provides me with a vehicle for work. It is a 2wd Toyota Aurion.
We have been fortunate enough to get some rain in this region which has turned some of the roads on which I have to drive to slop.
I had been working in the Tara district visiting numerous residents and was down to my last 2 before returning to
Chinchilla.
I had not been to the last area after rain, so asked the "Locals" in the office as to which way would be the best to take, as there is some areas in which you do not want to enter especially uninvited. I have an "In House" produced road map, from which I indicated which way I was going to take. No alternate route was suggested, so away I went.
The road which I had indicated I was going to take was covered with
water and was a rarely used black soil track. Luckily there was 2 other roads further along which I could take so continued along until I got the the next track, which was a dry partially formed gravel/black soil track. It looked good and the Aurion travelled along it quite nicely. There was a few wet spots but not bad enough to consider aborting using the track.
That was until I came across a spot that was about 15m in width that was wet. I did the walk/jump test and thought that I would get through easily ............................
Well maybe I would have with a bit more momentum hehehehe
I got to within 2m of the far side and the front wheel drive Aurion's tyres clogged up and began to sink :)
No worries I think I'll do the reverse the drive forward trick to rock myself out.
Nope that didn't work so off came my blunstone boots and out came the gum boots from behind the drivers
seat (Placed there especially for these instances). I commenced a bit of road building with available vegetation and tried again.
I had some success .................................
well that was until the rear
wheels go caught on the timber I had placed under the front
wheels causeing the front to lurch to the right into a bottomless bog off the side of the track :(
No worries I think I'll call the Tara office and get someone to come out to pull the Aurion out. Grab the phone only to find out I had No Bloody Signal :(
So I began walking back along the track towards the main road constantly checking to see if I had signal. After about 1km of walking I had 1 bar of signal, which is not enough to make a call but enough to send an SMS .............. Next problem was I didn't have anyone in the Tara offices' mobile numbers so I had to send SWMBO an SMS with the landline number of the Tara office, the road name and which direction I was heading (as the road went both directions from the main road), what had happened, and what I needed for them to do. After I had sent it, it was a case of fingers crossed that She recieved it and acted on it for me.
Instead of waiting for her to reply as it was 2pm by then I continued to walk towards the main road. 15 minutes later I recieved an SMS from SWMBO saying that someone was on the way. Another SMS arrived saying I had a voice message, by chance I tried calling voice mail and it connected. I heard the message, It was the Tara office checking to see if I was able to get myself out. Hanging up I tried calling the office and it connected but I could hear them and they couldn't hear me :( They hung up on me so I walked a bit further and tried again and got through and explained the situation. Only to get the 3rd degree as to why I was where I was ......................... Hello bleep s I asked before I left it that route was OK as I am not a local and was not advised not to travel that way.
I could see the main road from there so continued walking towards it and arrived there just as the bloke in the 4wd arrived. I told him to zero his trip metre to see how far I was down the road, he joked that it wouldn't be more than 600m as this road is unpassable after a few mm of rain and they had, had about 50mm. I had gotten the Aurion 3km down the track so he was quite suprised :)
After we got the Aurion out he suggested I go to the next track as it was an All Weather Gravel Road :( I wish I knew that 3 hours earlier hehehe
Once I had finished my required visits abiet 3 hours late I head for home to try washing the Aurion before the black soil set like rock aound the tyres rims, brake calipers etc............. No such luck LOL the mud has set hard around the brake calipers so I am off to the workshop tomorrow to put it on the hoist so I can remove the
wheels and clean it all up :)
So I have had a great day.
Chers Kev
