Todays paper had a recall on this and other models, steering shaft after a hard knock such as pot hole or FWD activity may break circlip which if broken may after several full lock turns disconnect your steering shaft removing control of the vehicle. I suggest toyota owners should check internet for latest recall to identify models affected.

Only affects Saharas after May 2005 and Lexus 470's and dont think us poor adventurers use them too much.

My steering shaft needed replacing after it was damaged by rust caused by water ingress.
I believe the second hand that was used came out of a Sahara.
Better talk to my mechanic.

I read of a lot of recalls across the world for Toyota.

One needs to be very aware of the issues and type of vehicle. Sadly, Toyota are succumbing to inferior workmanship that causes problems.

Not only do Toyotas cost more now but they have lost the quality control of years gone by. There are numerous vehicles capable of doing the same for much less cost.

It isnt workmanship that is the problem.

It is a perceived part failure caused by abnormal operation and only in certain Vin numbers as well.

The part was probably outsourced and a batch has turned out to be not up to standard.

Similarly with other recalls.

They dont build every part themselves but have to stand the crap from those who cant see the big picture.

It is however no excuse for keeping failures secret as not only Toyota have done.

In the increasingly complex art of building cars with several thousand parts it must be hard to be perfect.

Witness ball joints on XD-XF Falcons.
Territory brake lines.
Both 3rd party supplied items.

Graham,
Toyota are responsible for the parts, it is up to them to monitor quality control rightly or wrongly they get caned for inferior or defective vehicles, lately there have been many of these instances.

Where I work they can't keep up the supply of a/c condensers to our Toyota's. The old utes operated in the same conditions did not suffer the same problem. Doors on some of the 70 series wagons and utes are rusting prematurely, they lasted much longer on the old utes. Alternators, they are going through 1 a week because of the position they are mounted in.

The old utes were tough an d gained their reputation in mining and the bush.

That rep is slowly being eroded and Toyota are the builders so they will be judged

Its not just Toyota that has these recalls. Go check all manufacturers. Thay all have problems. eg. Nissan navara recall where the bonnet latch could be damaged causing it to open unexpectedly (can't see very well with the bonnet open) and X-Trails with similar problem to the 100 series, where steering loss is possible.

So long as they are finding the faults and recalling its all good. It when manufacturers cover these things up, as in the case of Mitsubishi in Japan that there are problems.

"systematically hid defects involving 800,000 vehicles"
Japanese executives went to jail over this.

O yeah. the Mitsubishi scandal is old news... 2004 and was more to do with the FUSO trucks, my point is that no recalls could be worse...
