Coopers Creek Ferry

Has there been an estimated end time to when the Coopers Creek ferry will cease opperating? We tried going up there last week unfortunately the roads were closed so we could not get to the ferry crossing and would like to go back in about 6 weeks time, so we are hoping the Coopers will still be in flood then.

Hi Draw
You do not have to panic just yet, as it will be running for many months to come. We were supposed to be back there 2 weeks ago, but like you, mother nature made sure that nobody had a ride.

Cheers

The punt will be there for some time.
We rode the beast on the 6.8.10 & spoke to the operator about a time frame, his reply was this, if there is no further rain in the catchment area’s it will probably stop early in the new year.
Now they have had loads of rain since the 6.8, it will be there for a long time.

Cheers
David

Hi
I crossed over on the ferry on the 4th Aug, the level then appeared to have dropped about 150mmm from the peak but wind strength and direction can cause a differance in levels on a large body of shallow water.
Looking at the water there and further upstream along with recent rrains, I would be sure the ferry will be running for a month or two yet.

We were there first week of August and managed to have a good look at levels over some distance upstream of the Birdsville track proper. Firstly Etadunna station said it had dropped a foot (~0.3m) at the time. Judging from water marks and debris, that was about right at the Birdsville track proper . But upstream in most sections it was clear it had dropped up to 1 metre (even a touch more), upstream of the first big lake upstream of the ferry (perhaps 4-5km up). Erosion marks make it easier to judge upstream. There are "constrictions" between lakes where the water flows faster and these appear to control the level.

We learnt that the commercial fishing of Lake Hope only begins when the Cooper separates from the Lake Hope, i.e. due to the level dropping, and I understand that started early to mid August.

So there is no doubt overall that it's dropping but given the volume of water up there its surely going to take a long time to drain. Fair bit of rain lately and forecast later this week too, so who knows. Cheers

Hi Leon, actually I am sorry to say we didn't have the time. Our interest was seeing the terrain through which the Cooper passes, birdlife etc. With lots of organising just didnt get time to prepare for fishing,..... I just wish the Cooper flooded more often. Cheers
