Not including waiting or being on the ferry but what sort of condition is the above track in and what sort of speed can you do on it.

G'day Dean,

Bottom end of the Birdsville Track is open to the ferry but the top end is closed due to wet conditions so the ferry will not be running.
Use the "roads" search function on EO - kept up to date and covers all the usual roads / tracks.

Cheers

John,
If you bothered searching yourself you would see all of the BV track is open to 4wd's only and has been since 4.20pm Saturday.
My specific question still stands re the detour track.

A fortnight ago tomorrow, the track was in good condition. Easy to maintain 60 - 70 kph so average would be 50. One could go faster but you are on Etadunna Station with stock around.

Hello Dean,

The southern side is exactly how Andrew described and is the longer section. The northern side is much sandier with more undulations due to there being more dunes. Speed about the same. Your tone was a bit harsh at John I thought, but thats just my opinion. Regardless, have a good trip. Mike

Dean,

If you can use the search function so well then why bother asking the question. All John has done is try to assist you.

John,

Some people just don't accept some assistance in some things. We have to catch up soon.

Cheers Kev

Guys
I understood Dean's question was specifically about the speed environment, something neither the Transport Dept site gives, nor this site.
The second issue is that this site is still showing Mungeranie to Birdsville closed whereas the Transport site indicates open to 4wd only from Maree to Birdsville.
Go gently
Cheers
Andrew

Dean, conditions will have changed since we did the ferry at end of June. It's 122 km from Maree to the by-pass turnoff. You could do 100kmh and risk a blowout if it gets too rocky. 80 to 90 is the go. The by-pass is about 40 km and is narrower than the Birdsville track. It had only been open for 3 weeks when we travelled and the road gang had laid clay so it wasn't sandy at all, unlike the northern side which had lots of sand but nothing that would be a bother. The dirt was there in long piles ready to grade and roll.
We drove to the northern bank of the Cooper at the B'ville Tk which is about 25 km from the ferry. And then did the reverse back to Marree - 370 km all up at a cost of almost $100 as ULP in Maree was $1.90ish. Worth every cent.
Go into Places and view Cooper Creek Ferry....... W

Oops, you want a time.40km at 60 kmh, so allow 45 mins. Depending on the queue at the ferry you could spend time chatting and photographing. Our day trip took 9 hours return.... W

Thanks all.
Having done the BVT many times in all conditions we now have some idea of the extra time needed to cover the detour.
