Jayco have someone make them inner spring mattresses to fit their vans. Our Dove has a so called Queen size at the front end. At the Penrith van show last year we wrote down details off the labels on mattresses in the display vans. We ordered a new one ( $390 delivered) 9 months ago from the
Melbourne maker and they shipped it up to a warehouse near Campbelltown and I drove out there to pick it up.
These special van mattresses are somewhat thinner than one that would go on your bed at
home but thicker than a foam van mattress. But it's comfortable. It does mean that you have to be a bit more careful when folding in the end canvas. We pull the mattress in by 25 cm so that the hoop support will lay as flat as possible and then the van roof will sit lower on the end and be easy to clamp down.
It's not really a queen size like our
home bed, more like a
home double but wider than a van double. There is extra weght in pulling it out too - how's your back?... W

Hi Warrie, is your new mattress an innerspring type or a better quality foam one? I live in Campbelltown and have a Swan so I would be keen to get some more information re your supplier and mattress name/brand/thickness if you have it thanks, cheers....

PradOz, have lost receipts but will go and wind van up tomorrow and read label off mattress - which IS an innerspring. SWMBO bought the eggshell foam to go on top so there's no doubt it is comfortable. We did a 3 month trip earlier in the year and it was a pleasure to sleep in after the foam matttress in our previous van... W

Details as follows: The mattress is called Perfect Camper.
Made by Beds Direct.
Factory 1 , 86 Wedge St Epping Vic 3076.
In the end we saved only $50 on the price from Jayco at St Marys. Best of luck..... W

Hi Mark
I have a Swan and also spine problems (surgery 2008 to remove 2 discs: replaced with artificial disc and a fusion) so know how bad the foam mattresses can get, so I understand why you want a change.
My back last Xmas got so sore we headed off to a camping store near
Coffs Harbour and bought one of those "eggcrate" overlays. Now it doesnt make it 100% better but it is a huge advance on what we had before with basic foam mattress.
*** But when it came time to packing up my Swan the extra thickness of the overlay prevented the roof clamps being locked in, so I would suggest that even though from inside when the roof is down it can look like there is enough room for a thicker mattress, more than likely you wont have much extra to play with at all. We ended up winding the roof back up completely to remove the overlay and roll it up separately. So if you know anyone with an overlay try that for sizing to see if your roof will lock down, then you will know what innerspring mattress size you can get.
For anyone that wants to try the overlays, they come in the varieties of - "good, better, best" so you can pay for a better one or take a cheaper one. Our medium type is ok enough, actually we have it on our bed at
home too.
I will be very interested to see if you can get an innerspring thats provides the necessary comfort and also fit into your Swan, cheers....
