Those that have reversing camera's on their vans, can you tell me how they are connected to the tow vehicle. I was thinking of getting another type trailer plug the smaller round type and using that.
Any help appreciated.
shane.

Search ebay for "wireless reversing camera". I am waiting for delivery of one. I'll post my findings here when I've recieved it.

Hi lesterb
Do you want a reversing or rear view camera? The focus point is different for different applications (see my reply further down the thread).

Sorry mother hen, I have all the camera's, but I tried the wireless type and found a lot of interference and continual re tuning. so now going to hard wire from caravan to patrol but trying to eliminate to many plugs.
cheers
Shane.

Wireless proved unsatisfactory with our heavy duty van. We have a separate plug with a spring like spiral connection cord.
Something like as shown here (search for spiral cable)

No but have heard of others using them for additional power circuits & cameras when 7 pins aren't enough.

Wireless cameras on a van are as useful as t++++ on a bull
There is simply too much metal between camera and receiver.
I had one It would go 100 ft to the side of the car perfectly
Take it behind the van and nothing.
Even tried putting receiver in back window of tug still no good.
Have a wired one and it goes perfectly.

I have a flat 7 pin plug mounted just below the main round 7 pin plug on the car. All the van wiring is encased in the one flexible sheath except for the last 150 mm where it splits and I connect each plug to the car. This way there is not 2 long leads to get tangled etc.

Yes, the flat plug has the wiring for the camera. Not all pins are needed but I needed power for camera, signal from camera & audio plus maybe an earth. Had it wired by an auto elec for about $100 but I think it would be possible to do yourself if you know about 12V electrics and can remove trim in the car - which is hardest part! You can get the pigs tail flexible lead as mentioned but the pins are very fine and I thought the 7pin plug was a bit more robust. I don't know how
water would affect the other plugs either - I have no trouble in the wet. I will see if I can work out how to post a photo.

hi, we have a wired camera as i really looked into getting a wireless and aparently they pickup security cameras while driving past shops and even what's in the back of dump trucks and get quite a lot of interfearance from the van, our wired one is one of the best gadgets we have, very handy in towns to see those cars that tuck up your bum, anyway ours is connected via it's own small trailer plug, if you want more details let me know, chris.

hi, yes we used a small round trailer plug, we decided on a smaller one so that if anyone borrows our car to tow something it can't be mixed up with the normal trailer plug. we just cut the ends off the av leads that come connected to the camera and mounted them in the plug. good luck chris.

Hi Shane. These guys seem to have special plugs wired to their camera. Have a look through their pictures. Bob

Have you used one like this Toyo? I note the camera in the link is 120º, which is the type usually recommended as a reversing camera, not a rear view camera. Focus will be for close range, and vehicles approaching from behind may not be visible until they are starting to pass you.

Hi Shane
As you have specified reversing camera, this is what replies have talked about. We found a rear view (one which you can see when a vehicle is approaching in the distance) of great value. It will also help you see when reversing and see a car tucked in behind you, whereas one focused specifically for reversing will not give good distance vision.

I have replied above but will add that I have both types on van. I can turn between the two camera's on the back of the patrol by clicking a switch. I want to setthe caravan ones up so they cancel the patrol ones out.
cheers
Shane.

I just have an RCA connector for the camera and run the power for it off the van.
The RCA has been hanging out the back of the car for 2 years and still going strong.
TO cancel one camera over another it would be best to do something with a two way switch on the power so that turning one on would switch the other off
My screen has a switch for camera 1 or 2

Hi Graham, I have input for two camera's but the rear camera's on the patrol are hooked up to those. I will be putting a switch it to cancel those out and run the caravan ones.

I bought a rear view system from Brash Imports. It works great. The camera is on the rear of my caravan and is the hard wired type. I had to mount the camera underneath a box that carries my generator as I found that the sun at certain angles would blur the picture. All is OK now except when vehicles with their headlights on come from behind but I can live with that. I do not have a spiral cable connection as sufficient cable is supplied.

I can also recommend Brash Imports as I got my setup from David and found him very helpful and reasonably priced. He can supply all the required leads & connectors as well. I have a rear-view camera for the rear of the van and a butterfly reversing camera on the 4WD.

Hi Chips59,
I wired up my own system and used good quality quad shield TV aerial cable for the video signal and "F" connectors at each end. The camera was purchased from 95 Soarer on Ebay.
I passed the male thread on the "F" connector through a small hole of the correct size drilled through the rear bumper on my cruiser and screwed an RCA adapter to the "F" connector. This placed the F connector on the front side of the rear bumper and the RCA adapter on the outside of the bumper. The cable was carried from the rear bumper to the connections inside the car for the monitor (7 inch) and you can use either an in dash flip up monitor as found on Ebay or a roof mounted unit as I used. Next time I would use the in dash monitor for ease of fitting. Anything less than 7 inch was a pain I found
I also bought a wireless setup which was useless. Going free to a good home and I will be glad to see the back of it.
I used the same "Quad Shield" cable to run the video signal the length of the van, again using F connectors and RCA adapters at each end, and also ran a reverse activated power wire to the rear of the van to switch the camera on when in reverse.
The system works very well and is a real marriage saver.
Hope this is of some help.
By the way folks, Derrick Bester of
ABR has a good deal on
Anderson plugs going at the moment. Pack of 10 for around $30.00
Chips, if you would like to email me for more info my add is alanvale at midcoast dot com dot au.
Regards, Bruce.

should have added that all the cable and fittings can be purchased from Jaycar, Dick smith, Altronics and any good electrical wholesaler.
