G'day All. I have a 2002 LS Challenger Automatic and have a problem with it not engaging 4WD the lights do not come on and it does not engage in either 4H or 4L. My mechanic has looked at it and said he can manually engage 4WD and seems to think it is a vacuum problem., He has been unable to find it and has recommended we go to the local Mitsubishi dealer as they should have more idea as to where all the vacuum hoses etc are. I went today to book it in and the chap told me they have to drop the transmission to get to the 4wd switches on the transfer and the switches could cost anything up to $200. Not having the knowledge about this I am hoping someone out there can confirm that the transmission does need dropping. I am guilty of not using 4WD as I only need it to reverse our caravan up our steepish gravel drive. So it is rearly used and after reading lots of posts that seems to be the cause of my current problem. Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I really do not want to get ripped off my the mitsubishi dealer.
Thanks Detour

Detour,
I had a 1999 Challenger with a similar problem. Was hard to engage and disengage 4wd. Local 4wd "specialist" couldn't diagnose properly so took it to the local Mitsubishi service centre. Fault was with one of the three(?) switches on the transfer case and was a reasonably cheap fix from memory.
Long term the car did have some similar future issues related to mud around the switches that were relieved with a good clean down after dirty trips and regular use of the 4wd activation when-ever possible.
Good luck
