Years ago , a drink out of a running stream or creek never worried me, But with all the rubbish and human garbage scattered about the place now, i start to thing twice about it,Not that some town water tastes all that brilliant at times..lol, needs boiling or filtering to make it half right in my opinion.

Yeah, we drank the water from the Gulpa Creek without any treatment for years, lived through it.

I'd probably still drink it ,but not too sure about some of the streams I've come across around Aus.

What's wrong with jerry cans? Water from creeks is ok for showers, the rest is stored and carried.

G'day Axle,
I reckon the higher you are up in the hills, the less likely the water is to be tainted. At the moment here in the north of N.S.W we have had a fair bit of rain and the creeks and gullies are flowing well and the water is sweet as can be. I have drank out of the creeks here at work without a second thought, you just make sure there's not a cow standing in the gully upstream, because they always seem to time there bath room break at the same time as there drink break. It's the same when your milking them ,as anyone knows who as ever milked a cow , head goes in the bail , tail goes up.
The lesson for today is always look upstream.
Cheers John

Axle,
the trouble with some town water is , some of it is more the colour of milk , and you can't even make a decent cuppa out of it. At least a lot of fresh creek water makes a good cuppa.
Cheers.

Hi All

Some of you might be familiar re: Teewah Beach / Rainbow Beach area in QLD, any way there are several Soaks which flow out of the Dunes and the water WAS crystal clear, (it's not any more), in the early days when we first started to camp there, I managed to take some samples and have them tested where I worked for the Local Govt, the results came back and the water was AAA perfect, I recall a time when this group of campers set up their camp clear of the Soak, they dammed part of it and had a section of PVC pipe sticking out of it so the water would trickle out of it and they wouldn't disturb any sediment, every thing was fine for a few days, people would pull up near it in there 4bys fill their water drums ect and leave it the way they found it, ok this mob pulled up one day with a tribe of kids they decided to wash a couple of kids in the dammed up Soak, a few campers raced over to advise them what it was for and next there was fight on, thats one instant where humans behave worse than critters, Now when you go up there the water is contaminated from Boofheads digging Drop Toilets next to Soaks and Toilet Paper and Nappies every where, as mentioned in other replies I would rather see the odd Cow in the vicinity than Human Waste.

Cheers

Always thought Oz mountain streams were ok to drink out of until we picked up a dose of Giardia.
Doc said, 'you think animals don't bleep in the creeks?"
Carry a small katadyne filter now when I travel just for when the town water runs out.

Regards

Well we used to drink the water out of a river that had a septic tank drain into it about 8k upstream of our hut.
That hut had about 50 people using the toilets every day.

Am still alive and have never been as fit and well as when I lived there and that was in the 60's
Perhaps the fact that it used to flood about every 10 days flushed it out LOL.

Axle,
I don't drink from creeks or dams as I have seen Giardia has done to a couple of friends. Not a nice thing to get

Have a good one
