These guys might be experienced, but how many times do we hear of things going pearshaped when jacks fail?
No criticism intended, just an observation.
This is from the Russians 'rally' team travelling across Aus, somewhere in the Simpson (see
http://tess.ru/ for their up to date progress)
If this image doesn't work, have a look at their photos (taken in the Simpson before
Birdsville)

There are ppl whose definition of risk is different to ours.
Russian roulette anyone?
You'd probably suffer culture shock in more than one way if you'd travel their country ;)

Level flat ground and three
wheels on ground ... should be pretty stable even without a baseplate for the jack.
I do it regularly with
wheels chocked ....... but he is a bit game getting under the wheel arch without a spare tyre or something under there for the diff to sit on.

Wheels are not "chocked" he is actually holding the vehicle back from rolling fwd with the right side of his head.

Don`t you chock the wheel diagonally opposite the one jacked up ??
It looks to me like it`s chocked.............ah
well I think it looks like it is ...........
ah I can`t actually see it .............. ah it could be...... but I`m not sure.
LOL LOL
Good looking tread on the tyres though, what tyres are they ?

AH, but what is he doing?
Maybe wetting his boots, if he is, the ground could become slippery, and THAT is another safety issue in it's self.
I do how ever see another issue, the bystander does not have a stubbie in his hand. This
well surely cause an accident.

They are members of the Russian 'rally' team, he's given his stubbie to the guy doing the work, cause it was hot under the wheel-arch :-)

hi
imho stupidity is the cause of mostor a lot of accidents
and there is a classic example
he is sitting on the wheel and if the vehicle moves he will be trapped as it fall down on his head and the wheel he sits on
the wheel as mentioned should have been pushed under the vehicle for a safety block and have a rope tyed to it before hand so as it can be retrieved without crawling under to reach it
i agree with the russian roulette comment
some mothers do have em'

Interesting point in this photo to think about, we drummed in the "need" to hold or at least have in your pocket the EPIRB, we had the small car types, when travelling alone and getting out of the car to do anything .......
If this guy was alone and he was changing the tyre and the car rolled off the jack on to him and he was pinned, his ONLY chance of any form of help would be the EPIRB ..........
At least keep it in the back of your mind and even go beyond and teach your kids how to use it cause you just never know eh......

I am going to watch and see how many Government bureaucrats we have on this site, that dish out the OHAS and tell us all the reasons this picture is wrong. LOVL
What is to say he doesn't have a jack stand on the other side out of view, but please don't spoil this
forum and think outside the box, criticize first without the facts, it makes for a good laugh.
No wonder I don't give out the info here that I used to.

Kangaroo jacks are brilliant but this is not the safest way to use them.

Ok the jack stand maybe on the other side of the guy fixing the car out of view, perhaps supporting the chassis.
That is more than feasible, and nobody on this site can prove it is not there.
Does that make my point clearer.

You're clearly not alone there GB. More so than ever posts, replies & photo's seem to get scutinized for every little detail. How many of the detractors on this discussion do you think have done the very thing being shown in the piccy?..........I know I have. Pot calling kettle :-)

Not a good idea
It is a simple thing to put the spare wheel under the axle / chassis rather than sit on it as this and the other pictures show.
This would prevent a single point of failure from having potentially nasty consequences.
In the last few weeks we have seen such a jack not work properly.

Hi all,
I dont think its wise to put your head under the wheel arch, unfortunatly you cant imbo proof the world.
I travelled thru Russia for work and they do things a little different over there, Its a definate look out for your own welfare place lol.

I wonder what the actual problem was. It can't have been a flat tyre, the spares are still on the roof.
Must have been something to do with the wheel hub, brakes, stick jammed in there????
He's certainly a split second away from spinal injuries or worse if that jack slipped.
Anyway, I think the Russians are used to operating without a 2 inch thick OH&S manual in their hands.

I wouldn't worry too much, it's been Photo Shopped.
The vehicle doesn't look like a Lada Niva at all. The "guy" at the rear wheel is a really an exhaust jack with a shirt over it.
You can clearly see a steel brace propping the front of the vehicle from movement, but that's been changed to a shovel with a bit of artistic license.
The jack hasn't sunk into the sand, so there's no load on it, and nobody leaves the jack handle down so it can be bumped.
And let's face it, everyone knows that owning a Land Cruiser means you don't have stoppages
There are no obvious toolboxes or
tools visible for working on the vehicle, and no empty vodka bottles or cigarette butts smouldering on the ground.
Russian???? I don't think so.
Probably a part of an 4x4 magazine advertisement for blue storage bags.

Oh my god!
There's a shovel leaning against the bull bar!! Surely that's not safe!!!
And - what's he doing with the hammer? (oops - sorry - mallet - 'my bad'!!!)
-
And - how come the 4wd (oops - truck - 'my bad' again) hasn't rolled off the jack at the angle it's on? Who know's - can't tell from this photo or the other one.....maybe the other front wheel IS CHOCKED!!! (shock horror!)
Not really having a go at you Chris, but this whole nit-picking post based on photos and not actually being there to see the real story.
Bit like the post with the quads & Ocka support crew "wrecking
the desert tracks for years to come" or the original post about some russians driving "too fast" for some peoples liking....
Oh Please ! - Is life that boring that people need to bag others 'cos they're out there having fun.
Get a grip - it's posts & attitudes like this that feed the over regulated society we live in today.....
Rant over - no follow up.

The idea of such a thread is to promote safety and think through your actions. Every few months there are people killed by such actions - tragedies to all around (including the families) that could be easily avoided through a bit of forward thinking.
Having had a near death experience with a traumatic road crash brings such things to the forward (perhaps people who have had such things happen or have had direct dealings with such events are more aware than others of thinking through to possible final results). She'll be right mate - look at me - and in most cases it will but then things go pear shaped really quickly...
