We're about to set off on a 3-month journey from
Brisbane to WA and back. We were going to head down the
Birdsville track but have been discouraged by the rain. I am thinking we will do that area on our return which would be in late November/early December. Has anyone travelled this area during those times, and am I crazy in thinking it would be enjoyable then?
Although I can handle the heat, my wife + two
young kids might not enjoy it as much.
Another thing I wanted to ask - how long would Lake Eyre still be full like it is now (as I've been told), will it last until November, or should we head up there on our way through (within a month). We'll be going south from
Brisbane, leaving in a few days.
Thanks,
Adam

Wow. That's incredible. Hope you make it out OK. We'll be hitting the bitumen down through NSW so hopefully by the time we make it back that area will be perfect :) Here's hopin!

Hi Quincy,
Hope you are on dry land by now.... but I have got to ask.
Was recently (2 months ago) in
Birdsville and stayed in one of the powered sites close to the road and the across from the cabins. Was the 1 foot of
water in that area or down the
hill near the
billabong.

Use elders weather SA 12 month long range forecast says above normal rainfall for Dec. and average for Nov. You see this is when we normaly get rain. I am afraid it's best to wait until it is closer to the day. The Lake does evaporate rather quickly unless you hear about 5 inches and more on the Diamintina it's flow is just about over. There is rarely any travelllers so you might find your self alone on the tracks, it's anywhere from 42 - 52 degrees, loads of flies and loads of night time insects but I like it. Sounds like fun in
Birdsville but they have been broadcasting this rain for about a week so those who went did so on a whim plus race organiser didn't do to much to tell anyone. This area has been under flood watch for 3 days before the races began, You could hear it on the radio - flood watch and then
Birdsville races didn't make sense too me. I meet some race goers on the way they didn't seem to be bothered as long as the beer got there.
