U-Bute BBQ

Hi All,

I watched Discover Downunder yesterday they were using one of these Double butane canister BBQ. I was just wondering if any one has one & What do they think of the U-Bute BBQ. Are they okay.

Macca,

I watched it as well and I still can not get over the price of it, $199. I think I will make do with 2 single ones with the added teflon hot plate you can get for them.

Cheers Kev

I agree Our 2 burner cooker with a cast iron plate is practically the same and cost under $100.
The 2kg gas bottle lasts for months

Graham,

I have a 2 burner cooker with cast plate as well although I have a 4 and a 9kg gas bottle. The single butane cooktops are good for quick coffee stops etc as they are quick and easy to set up, but not real good when it is very cold.

I'll second that on the Weber Baby Q, waited for a Ranger Camping 20% off day and paid around $200.No need to carry extra gas bottle, just use the 4.5kg one off the Avan....

Ill stick to mine as the Q is significantly heavier than what I have and mine fits in a much smaller space.

i,m with you 2 burner cooker with the cast iron hot plate, we have had ours for about 25 years and still works fine. Also cooks the best steak as it heats up quick and seals in all the juice's

Dare I say it but I expect a regular BBQ plate sitting on top of 2 single burners would do the same.

Less than half the price but perhaps not so convenient.

I'd be very careful doing that.
saw this on another forum;
This is what happens when one of these things explodes whilst you are cooking on it …

I had burns like this to arms and back. My mate had burns like this to face.

It happened first night of a camping trip to Moreton Island.

I highly recommend avoiding these things at all costs; if you are going to use one, do not let it overheat. We had been using a fry pan on it to cook sausages for about 20 minutes; The frying pan was larger than cooking surface and we can only guess the heat radiated back and made the thing way too hot.

The burns doctors at hospital reckon they get 3 of these per week over the xmas holidays. Pay extra and get yourself a gas cylinder that is separate to the cooking area. Also check http://www.exploroz.com/Forum/Topic/54235/Exploding_Portable_Stoves.aspx

Have a look at Hillbilly cooking equipment. They make a little square hotplate with a handle that fits on top of a single burner stove. At $40 you're miles ahead. They also make a plate that fits on a standard 2 burner gas stove thats $65. Again, you're miles ahead.

Heres a link to Hillbilly.

I myself thought the U-Bute BBQ was over priced. We use the single butane stove when we stop for a quick coffee. I think I paid around $40 with three extra butane bottles. Thanks for all your replies.
