Mereenie Loop Feedback

Did this on the 10th August 2010. Road is pretty cut up and rutted in places due to recent rains and doesn't get graded regularly. Quite corrugated in parts. Averaged about 50 km/hr with a Kimberley Karavan in tow.

I read somewhere they were going to seal the Mereenie loop road.

They still got the "Slowem down " and "Speedem Up " signs on the old 44 gallon drums on one of the bends?

Yep, still there!
"Liftum foot" and "puttum down again"!
Looks like they've had a makeover not so long ago.
There was some grading going on when I was thru there late July.
cheers

I liked them.
It is great to find something that makes you grin on a rough corrugated road.

There should be more of it!
I got a laugh some years ago up in Cape Tribulation, where there were the signs of the speed bumps and cassowarys modified to "before" and "after".
I'm sure a member will post the actual pics - they've been circulated all over the world.

That's it Gerry I knew I had it wrong but sure somebody would have the correct wording. We had a good laugh when we read them. A bit like the "Are we there yet" sign going into the Mitchell Plateau.

Duncan - loved that one on the Mitchell falls road

recent trip I can't remember where, some wags had taken to enlivening the 'dip' signs along a boring stretch .... a bit of artful paint work and we came across....

'drip' 'strip' 'trip' 'stripe' 'chip' 'flip' 'clip' and a lot of other variations...

Brings back memories, we were on our way back home (to Alice) from a day trip to Kings Canyon and got caught in the rain on the Mereenie. We had to winch a few people through a river crossing (the second people shouldn't have really attempted it but anyhow). We had to find high ground for the night as by that stage the road turned into a river pretty much as well! It was all in a relatively short period of time.
I was pretty bummed that the people didn't return my favourite shorts or good sleeping bag I lent them to keep warm for the night.

You should wear smellier shorts next time ;-}

....

The Mereenie is as good as the most recent weather and grading. Pot luck.

Gday BJ

We came through last week. We're trying to recall how much dirt there was. It started just north of Kings Canyon Resort, and finished well before Redbank Gorge so at a guess there's probably about 150kms of dirt. The only rough bit about it was the small corrugations which can be avoided in some sections if you move to the side a bit.

We tow a large dirt road van behind the cruiser - all up it ways about 6.5t. We just let the tyres down a bit and then poke along - in the rougher sections we would slow down to 40 or 50kph - max speed for us in the dirt is 70 - 75 with the van behind.

Like most roads out this way the Mereenie Loop Road is in pretty good condition but this changes very quickly with a bit of rain.

regards

John

If you're looking for somewhere to camp Barry I can recommend Redbank Gorge. Despite Camps 5 noting that it was not suitable for large rigs, we got our 15m cruiser/van combination in there no problems at all. THere are two campsites - the better one is a kilometer up the hill past the first site. $3.30/person/night - toilets and fireplaces and large seats. No water. We stayed there two nights and could easily have extended for a few more - just a nice place to be with excellent views across the valley.

These photos show what most of the road is like.

regards

John
