What have you seen. Experienced. Heard?
Hi. My partner and I are just about to venture into the unknown with our first van. That is, when we get it. Due to layout and weight considerations we are looking at something around the 22' point. A Jayco Sterling is high on the list as is a similar Coromal. I would be opting for the Simplicity suspension on the Jayco.
I would like any comment on the durability of the these when off the black top. Not intending any serious off road stuff just typical Australian country and outback dirt, potholes and corrugations one may encounter along the A to B.

If anyone can be bothered. Thanks heaps.

Gazza, as long as you opt for the outback version. I've got a Jayco 18' pop top, out back, real happy. Put some good tyres on her. Most vans now come with crap tyres. I've fitted 32x11.5x15,only have to run them at 30 psi. Helps suspension. Christian, they are great shots!

The Outback is not really any different to the standard. Bigger tyres is about all and an extra leaf in the suspension.

If you opt to undersling the suspension on a standard Sterling then you have more or less got the Outback Chassis, all you need is the bigger tyres. With the simplicity you get the same clearance as underslung and the same chassis as I have.

The Outback is not available in anything above 21", or at least that used to be the case.

In my case, I have an underslung (factory) 24' van but they woudn't put on the bigger tyres..some marketing crap...!! Anyway, I have driven hundreds of km on dirt roads, some quite corrugated. We drove from Almaden to Herbeton in FNQ and the signs said not suitable for caravans..., it was a doddle. Also drove from Gregory Downs via Burketown to Normanton and last year, from Yunta to Arkaroola..., that was the worst of them, 300km of corrugations.

The only problem was dust ingress and it takes forever to get it out but then, a lot of the more serious off road vans get that too.

Having said all that, if I had my time again, I would buy a Kedron Top Ender as I now find, travelling around Australia as I am, there are many places I would like to go but can't due to the limitations of a road van. The problem is, my van cost $62,000 new, the Top Ender ...give or take $130,000...!!! I am having difficulty convincing SWMBO....There are several others, Bushtracker, Phoenix, Spinnefex, but I would have the Kedron personally.

Have to diagree with you Don M. The outback has a 150mm chasis, 12"brakes, Offroad magnets, 16"wheels, Heavier draw bar to name a few diferences, They are also made up to 21'10" (2164 model) and can be ordered with simplicity suspension. Regards,Bob

Bob,

They keep on changing but mine is a 2008 model, 24.75.2, underslung from order and it has a full 150mm chassis and I thought they all did above 20ft. I also have a 150mm drawbar and yes I know they can all be ordered with Simplicity, including on road Jayco vans. Wheels and tyres are easy to add on, when mine wear out I'll change from 15" to 16" with bigger tyres.

As for brakes, a good mate has a 2007, 20ft Outback and it has 45mm axles, 10" brakes, exactly the same as mine. Magnet wise, I don't know and, in fact, you have given me a bit of advice. After all my recent dirt roading, I ended up locking my brakes between Cloncurry and Mt Isa...had to replace all the hubs and magnets as the hubs were so scoured from all the dirt ingress and one of the magnets had broken off the mounting bracket, hence the lock up. So what are the off road magnets about...??? Sound like the thing to go for and probably not a big cost either. I know the Kedron have brakes that can be hosed out..

And, if I did go for the top end van, I would insist on disc brakes, they are readily available and much easier to work on.

But the main point here is, the Jayco Outback, even though it may have one or two extras to make it better off road, it is still barely more than any standard on road van and if you really want to go seriously off road then, Kedrons/Bustracker/Spinnefex/Phoenix..(.all Queensland I might add) and maybe the Trackmaster.

Thanks for that Bob.

I can't see what the difference is and the catalogue pages I looked at don't talk about it, but will do a bit of research.

Hi Gazza,

Don M makes some excellent points.

Coromal makes a "good" off road van. Better than a Jayco. I say this as I travel full time with a Kedron and we get to the really off road places. I see a more Coromals there.

22 ft I think is about as big as you can go in an off roader. Ours is 22.5 but I would prefer 19. You get a big swing in the tail of the van and this makes it much much harder getting around trees on windy tracks. It also reduced you ability to cross steep creeks as well.

There is not free lunch with caravaning. You cannot get a silk purse for the cost of a sow. Take the chassis for example. If it is not "hot gal dipped" the rocks on a gravel road will just chip all the paint of it. The Stirling has PVC plumming under it and the rocks will just bleep ter this as well.

Make a list of the things you want in you van. Independent suspension, airbags, coil springs, shock absorbers, leaf springs etc. Look at the cupboards inside, quality fo hindges, locks. How well is the fridge mounted. Take out draws and look inside. Check how neat cabling iand pipes are layed out.

The best thing (not certain where you are located) is to visit some off road caravan displays and crawl under them. Look at how they are made and take a digital camera to take pics. You can then compare at home on the computer. Don gave you the names to look at. You can see how the very best are made and then do the cost - quality equasion. My list will be yelled at but this is my ladder.
Bushtracker
Kedron - Spinifex
Trackmaster - Phonex -Elross - Lotus Trooper

I stand to be corrected but havent Jayco got leaf load sharing suspension and not Simplicity.
My Roadstar had Simplicity and have never seen a Jayco with similar.

Yes Graham, they have but Simplicity is an option...about $2500 from memory. And, the whole thing is hot dipped galvanised if ordered from new.

Coromals suspension isnt even load sharing.
Our Princeton has just two sets of leaves completely separated from each other.

Also the chassis is far lighter than what the Roadstar had and they actually state thate 2% flex is permissable !!!!!

I wouldnt take mine off road at aall I dont think.

Hello Gazza51....ours is a 2005, underslung axle with ordinary suspension with no shocks,at 21ft and weighing at 2 and half ton.....and I am able to take her offroad a reasonable amount BUT not as much as the you would with say kedron etc....dust can be an issue but so far manageable but no other issues, ie cupboards etc.

As you can see I am fairly carefull where I go but I manage to be able to get into most places without too much trouble......I guess there is offroad and OFFROAD if you know what I mean.

Thanx Redbakk.

That's just the sort of thing I'm wanting to read.
Nice location too Hope you didn't go to too much trouble to get those pics for me!
I'm assuming the roads that took you to where the shots were taken could have been a lot worse than where you are - if you know what I mean.
Yes there is off road and OFFROAD. For practical purposes I'm definitely the former.
I'm under no illusion there.
As a matter of interest. What's the tare of that van?

She has a tare mass of 1923 Kg, a GTM of 2224 Kg, a ATM of 2398 Kg and 174 Kg downward weight on the tow ball.
However with all the extras and additions etc I think those weights may be heavier..... : )))).
The tyres are rated to carry the load and I now carry 2 spares as well.
