Got an email this morning from friends travelling at
Birdsville.
"We are finally leaving
Birdsville today. The roads have been cut for
almost a week now but they opened one of them yesterday. Over 600 cars
left yesterday and we are leaving this morning. There is, apparently,
still 600 mm of
water on the road in
places but everyone seems to be
getting through since the
water is still and fairly narrow. We had a
wonderful time here over the week. there were some 5000 people here and
things were just wonderful until the rains came and trapped everyone
here for a week in a town with one pub, one service station and a
bakery. The publican was thrilled since there was nothing else to do
but sit and drink beer! We will go through to
Windorah today and see
how the roads out that way are."
He mentioned only one service station, has the BP closed...????

Thanks for this Doug...the power of the
Forum.!
We'll be heading up to
Birdsville (hopefully) in 19 days from
Adelaide and then onto
Windorah, so please keep me posted.
I understand the conditions can and will change daily, but it gives us a rough idea of the delays between rain falling and roads reopening.
Love the Gov. sites with road updates, but I've found they can sometimes be a bit slow to update.
Thanks again....
fab.

Hi Fab
When you head for
Windorah, there are some great
camping spots a few kilometres out of town on the
Cooper Creek,
well worth a look if you have the time and looking for a good
camping spot.
Cheers
Stephen

Yes there is 2 servo's in town Mobile and BP, the BP is more of a store but both have a few supplies. AS for the Gov updates we were told at
PIMBA on the way up and around that if the UPDATES are a week old then thats still current until UPDATED.

Yes a
Mobil, I was thinking BP, not been there for 4 years, anyhow the bloke who sent the email drives a V8 Troopy towing a Kedron so he probably missed it , either that or he spent too much time in the pub.

Hi Doug, just found your thread, we spent that week in
Birdsville as you know and we didn't step inside the pub but we still found plenty to do. LOL. As others have said there are still the two servo's in town, the
Mobil is opposite the pub so I guess that is why most of the people missed it hahaha, that is the one we used as it seemed to be the one that wasn't getting a lot of business as it isn't as visible as the BP, it's easy to miss, the people running it seemed very nice as
well. The
post Office is attached to the
Mobil also.
We have to give the people of
Birdsville full credit for keeping the activities going for all that time and keeping the people happy even though the smokes were running low, apparently plenty of amber fluid though.
Cheers
Deanna
