I recently decided to do some Surf fishing and dug out my old 2 piece rod. first problem was that it would not fit into the 4wd because of the cargo Barrier.
I went to a couple of fishing stores to buy one of the rod carriers that clamp onto the roof rail. Apparently they have not been made for 15 years and the only option was a version of a ski rack.
I could put on the roof racks and tie them to it, but this is a lot of trouble to go too just for a quick drive down to
the beach
Any ideas?

Depending on which state you are in you could get a bullbar mount holder. I also have a Jarvis Walker Rod tube that is hose clamped to my roof racks. You say you have roof rails? A few occy straps with one of these rod tubes would do the trick.

Matty
Whats the difference between states with a bullbar mounted holder?
Are they legal in some states but not others?

They are illegal in NSW if mounted so that any part of them or the rods protrudes forward of the bullbar. Mind you plenty still have them.

Same in Qld and are not supposed to protrude in front of bullbar at all ever.
Shame they dont ever enforce it

Think you'l find that b/bar mounted fishing rod holders are NOT illegal in QLD if actually in use , they become an ILLEGAL protubance if empty and not turned to the inside of the bar so that nothing protubes forward of the bar.

You are possibly correct but they are supposed to be mounted in a certain place on the bar and as you say be turned back when not it use HAHA I think I have seen 1 in this position.
Technically it is illegal to have ANYTHING protrude in front of a bullbar.
Rod holders,
driving lights or whatever.
Have seen an old troopy with an outboard carried in front of a bull bar.
I would think the end of a rod in your face would do almost as much damage as the holders.
Should be carried on the roof.

These days I use the roof mount suction cup type holders with the velcro straps. About $15 TO $20 at BCF or tackle shops. Have travelled around Aus. with 3 rods and never came adrift or marked paint. Just be sure to wipe the area where they are to be located. Just put them up when needed, quick and easy.
