This is for my neighbour, he has 06 DID pajero exceed, started to get that sound when starting that the battery was on its way so today he has purchased a new battery (820cca) same as the one that was in there, Ok new battery in hit the key, still the same ?? Vehicle has been well serviced and was only about 3 weeks ago had a full service as usual when its required. It has just done over the 200 thou mark. It does it either when its hot or cold. I dont know if these things even have glo plugs ?? but if it does then when the motor is hot and still turning over the same (sluggish) then I would imagine its not glow plug related. Any ideas or is there some thing common with these motors that would cause this. It just started doing it on the weekend. He has never had an ounce of trouble with the vehicle been a great car but he has a trip coming up soon and will obviously put into a mechanic to see if they can find the fault but thought I would ask here first.Thankyou ...............

There is a couple of things your neighbour can do himself without having to have a whole lot of autolec knowledge and experience.

Seeing as how he has put a new battery in the assumption is that it isn't the battery. (Could be wrong but odds are its OK).

Second thing I would go for are the the terminals on the ends of the batterry leads. Over a period of time these suckers usually get a build up of some type of electrolis crud between them and the battery post, even though they originally went on both clean, tight and probably new, this layer/film just gets there and slowly but surely causes starting symptoms very similar to a dying battery. So I would disconnect them and give them a scrape out. I use an old pocket knife, others use a special battery terminal cleaning tool. Just something appropriate to 'break the subject layer of crud off.

If that doesn't make any difference, then I would check all battery downstream terminals to make sure they were tight and the battery leads hadn't been damages in any way. All your neighbour has to do is follow the positive lead down to the starter motor and make sure its on there nice and tight. Then follow the earth lead to where it should attach to the motor somewhere nice and tight. It may and I stress may, attach to the body of the vehicle in which case there should be another similar cable going from the vehicle body to the engine, transmission somewhere.

I have made assumption that the vehicle we are talking about has a negative earth.

Other than that I would respectfully suggest that the vehicle be taken to a Auto Electrician to be diagnosed and fixed as there are numerous things in the starter motor itself that could be causing the problem. These 'things' req expertise, tools and knowledge to fix.

Have a good one

HERE HERE,i agree with dust devil, many a good battery have been changed due to dud terminals, they may look good but need a good scrape or sand paper{lead end}some genuine terminals are crap, feel the terminals after youve tried to start and if theyre hot its either terminal or starter motor,
follow dust devils tips above and you should get a result

These things have a habit of leaking deisel from the rear of the injector pump, which drips down onto the starter and eventally kills it. Easy to check for though...

Hi Kimba Try turning headlights on and watch to see if the lights dim significantly when cranking the motor . . . if they Don't it could be the brushes or the brush springs in the starter not making adequate contact, if the lights do dim then you have a more serious prob and auto lecie will need to be sought

I Might add try all the other good advice as well but that quick test will show whether the starter is really getting serious power to it. if it isn't start checking from the battery to the starter.
Good luck

After he has replaced all known parts with many hours of work he may want to take it to someone who knows what they are doing.

We get people coming in who have spent $100's if not $1000's on trying to fix something them selves only for us to have a look and say "mate this wire is corroded" or some other easy fix.

This has what made us and many others charge a diagnostic fee.

Thankyou all, have printed up and will hand over to him this afternoon, thankyou all for your tips if all else fails he will take it to auto elec who by the way I rang this morning and he said check all earth straps/leads (as you have said) and if that fails he said starter motor. He said it wouldnt be a fuel issue as its the starter motor that does the work spinning the motor so if it was fuel it would still be spinnig quick when you hit the key not sound like the battery is getting low......

I own an 06 Paj and can tell you that it is definitely the starter motor. Mine showed your symptoms abut 18 months ago and I went through the same process that you did only to eventually come to the point of realising that the problem was right under my nose. In early June I got my mechanic to fully check out the issue and his resident sparky said "that's the worst starter motor I've ever heard, how does it start the vehicle". A $300 recon later and it starts up after 1 second - just like brand new.
