My GQ 2.8td patrol experienced an oil leak a few weekends ago. Not bad after 270,000km's (most off road). Finished up I needed work done on the crankshaft. As I'm doing the Canning in 2012 I thought it was a good opportunity whilst the engine was out to get some other work done.
replace original alternator
replace original fuel pump
crankshaft fixed
conrod bearings replaced
turbo rebuild (was good but why not!)
engine mounts replaced
new heavy duty clutch to replace original
all belts and hoses
replace timing belt
I think that's it; I've lost count! Us 4wders must be mad because I'm not flinching at all with this work or cost. It's my passion and we love the
places this car has taken us without any reliability issues (and want that to continue). Running the vehicle into the ground and upgrading has never been on our mind. I know every inch of the car, I love it's quirks and we can trust it to get us home.

We did the same thing 12 months ago only have been plagued with oil leaks from the tappet cover. Three seals so far. Driveway is stuffed thanks to all the troubles over the last 12 months. Double check the age of the parts. Just because its new to you that doesn't mean it hasn't been sitting on the shelf for 15 years. We had the so called new stem seals replaced about a month ago because one of the seals failed. Touch wood we go away this week with out any troubles the engine bay is oil leak free phew.
We thought about replacing the bloody thing but would need 80k plus. Not with kids thanks.

lets hope I don't have those problems! I have a 2 day gap between getting the car back and heading up the
Birdsville track for a quick trip.

While your at it, have you looked at the injectors? When my 2.8td Patrol had a head rebuild, (250 000ks)i got the injectors checked. They were poor. Apparently are suppose to be replaced/recon every 100 000ks.
Don't know if it was head rebuild, or injectors, but performance was improved.
