Hello,
We are about to buy a new car and want to know if anyone has heard anything negative about the 2006 Subaru Outback MY06 Auto 6 Cyl. What life span would the engine have? Help not sure whether to buy it or not. thank you

Hello,
We have a camper trailer with a boat on the top which we took around OZ with a Courier. (stupid car)_but its mainly for a family car that we can take away on holidays and yes mostly black stuff but also off road now and again.

Suburu make a good motor - have not had the 6 only the 4 but we put over 340,000k on a motor before it got a bit tired. We dropped a second hand one back in that had done 75k.
Keep in mind it was always serviced - Cheers

Hi. I service three of them for three different customers. The highest mileage is around 220000 km. Spark plugs are hard to get at and being iridium they are fairly expensive but only require replacement every 100000km. They have all been very reliable but are all serviced at 10000km intervals, not the recomended 12500kms. Subaru recommend an upper cylinder lubricant be added at each service. Tyres are expensive. The high mileage one will need tappet cover gaskets soon as it is leaking oil. I'm not looking forward to this job. The lower mileage one (48000) has had lower control arm bushes on the front replaced but it was not an expensive job. They are a comfortable, powerful car but I am not sure how good their fuel economy is. Hope that helps a bit. Bob

Hi,
I have had 2 of the 'H6" Subaru's, 2001 & 2005. No problems with either of them. I ran the 2001 to 130k km standard and did areas like
Coober Pedy -
Oodnadatta -
Marree & Flinders etc. No problems - but all my cars are
well serviced.
In the 2006 model we did the
Corner country and Southern Qld etc. Towed a hire camper trailer (hard floor) and then our Kimberly Kamper trailer. Also did a number of off road tracks . This car had a Subaru Xtreme bull-bar and Sump guard - impressed with where it could go - as long as you used some caution - all with standard ride height.
When towing two things to keep in mind - 1) tow ball weight - anything over 80kg requires a WDH and 2) fuel range. I'd start looking for the next fuel stop at around 400+km (standard
tank good for around 500km towing). The Kamper trailer allowed access to an additional 60l (3 jerry cans).
Have since changed to a Navara due to wanting a little bit more 'off road' ability -
Simpson Desert etc and a longer range (150l + 60l on c/trailer keeps me happy)

Hi Bug,
Our second car is a 2005 H6 Outback (only come in the 5 speed auto). It's been a great car, having bought it second hand 3 years old, and low mileage - now up to 62k km.
While I can't comment on the life span of the engine, being low mileage, we've been happy with it. Quality of the car is first rate, and this is usually refelcted in customer sat. surveys.
One thing I will say is that the fuel usage (95 RON or greater) is higher than it should be for a 3 litre 6 cylinder. I think this is probably because the engine likes to rev, and the gearbox is only too happy to oblige ! However, having said that, I'm getting between 9 and 14 l/100 km (with the latter being peak hour driving in
Melbourne), with a long term average of 11.7.
Hope this helps.
Cheers, Mark.

I had an 04 h6 outback for 125000 kms with no problems. I sold it because wasn't good enough off road and used too much fuel. Also, the standard road tyres were expensive and pretty weak. Otherwise it was a nice car. I have a td4 Freelander 2 now that makes it look really ordinary in every department. Mike
