Bloomfield Track

Hi,

I am planning on driving from Cape Tribulation to Wujal Wujal (return) next Thursday 16 September. Is anyone able to tell me the condition of the road and river crossings? I am not a particulary experienced off-road driver.

I am borrowing a RAV4 off a friend in Cairns, is this veichle appropriate for this road? If so how long do you think the drive would take?

Cheers,

Fred.

The Bloomfield Track should be renamed the Bloomfield Road these days IMO, though it is not sealed, it may be undertaken with standard vehicles in dry conditions.

The drive is fairly short, 1-2 hours depending on what you intend looking at along the way.

The first major creek crossing, Emmagen Creek, will define if you can make the trip or not. If the water levels are higher than you are comfortable with, then this will limit your trip. It is one of the deepest crossings though some other creeks may be slightly deeper if approached from the wrong direction and after rain...there is a "puddle" just up the road that may be deeper if going through the middle. Skirting the side is no problems.

Enjoy your outing and with your concern for the vehicle, you should have no problems with the location.

Hope that helps,
Andrew

I agree with Andrew it is now a highway :-)

To put the drive into perspective if you go from Cairns to Cooktown via the inland road (all sealed 120k further) it will take you around 3 & 1/2 Hrs. Do Cairns to Cooktown by the coast/Bloomfield track it will take from 5 to 5 & 1/2 Hrs.

It is an interesting drive, quite picturesque.
Surprised Andrew states it is a two hour trip. I can't imagine whoever you are going to borrow the Rav from will be too impressed. We did it in 5 hours and would have preferred to be driving someonelses 4wd. I am not into 4wdriving for the sake of it. Use it when I need it but will always take the better road if there is no real reason to go on the rough stuff. came back on the inland road in three hours.

kend88 - Andrew would be quoting on the trip from Cape trib to Wujal Wujal.

Still that section would be at the best 2 hours

That's correct Tony, the OP asked about the Bloomfield Track which starts at Cape Tribulation, not Cairns :)

Cairns to Cooktown is around 5 hours plus, though Fred is only going to Wugul Wugul by his posting. I would suggest Fred check out the Treknotes for the Bloomfield Track which are shown in the thread underlined. ;)

Hope that helps,
Andrew

Kend88 - Just noticed you said inland road back in 3 hrs :-) That's why Andrew can do the Bloomfield track in 1-2hrs :-)

Its 320k Cooktown to Cairns - Needless to say if you do better than 3 & 1/2 hrs you spent quite a bit of that drive well over the speed limit :-) There is a bit of that drive that is in 80 and 60k zones as well.

Cheers Tony

Fred

We went up that way in July. Thats not a track its a road. You should be fine. Just a few rocks in the creeks but I would take a 2WD car on it.

It's an hour from Cairns to Mareeba (6o km) and then another 270 km from Mareeba to Cooktown. The average travel time from Mareeba to Cooktown is around 3.5 to 4.5 hours, depending on cattle etc.

It's all sealed now which reduces the travel time as well.

Hi Fred, we were on the track last week, after and during the rain. Then the creek crossings were no drama. We were towing a heavy camper with an 80 series, and the only problem was the local trafic, obviously not keen on a slow scenic drive! We had a bit of wheel spin going up the steep concreted sections, but only because of the wet, and the heravy camper. Got up no worries though, and only thought of using low range once I had got over the incline, so could have done heaps easier.

Hi all,

Thanks for all your advice, sounds like it'll be no problems with the RAV4 even if there has been a little bit of rain about. Sounds like it sound be a good drive!

Yeah I'm only going from Cape Tribulation to Wujal Wujal return. I phoned Cairns Council last week about the road and they made it seem a lot more sketchy than it sounds like it is. I had heard there was a bit of rain about, but by the sounds of it I should be fine.

Cheers all.

Hi Fred, as others have stated it's an easy drive.
I came through from Cooktown to Cape Trib last Tue. It rained most of the way but the Donovan Range has a concrete cover on the steep bits and the Cowley range has road base on it.
Last time we were on it you had to drive through the Bloomfield river ( no causeway then) and the ranges when wet were tricky. That was in a 60 series cruiser, this time in a '08 diesel suzuki vitara.
cheers
