My top places to eat up north and your suggestions invited!

Hi
Having just returned from 8 weeks up north, wanted to recommend some places where people are cooking up good value meals in out of the way places.

Most unexpected cafe; "Whale song" just north of Middle Lagoon on Cape Leveque. If you are up this way call in, on the beach, great atmosphere, coffee and cake where you would not expect to find it.
Gibb River Road special; "Mt Hart Lodge" Absolutely great 3 course meal for $35, can't get better than that 50 km off the GRR and kids under 10 free
Best value; "Heavitree Gap Tavern"Alice Springs $10 nighly specials (lamb shank the night we went) plus entertainment thrown in for free.

What other places have people discovered this year?

Its certianly possible to get great food and good value in out of the ways places. Enjoy!

The restaurant at Kooljamon is great value try the crispy skinned
as good as I have tried.

Also the seafood platter at Town Beach Cafe @ $80 for 4 is a top meal, takes a lot of beating.

Barra burger at the Wyndham Town Hotel.

Best barra burger ever, always guaranteed wild caught barra.

Hi Outback

Heavitree Gap was good in our recent trip but they only have 1 selection each night and its never Vegetarian , so our favorite up north was Marla with its great salad bar main dish at $5.50 each and huge glass of chardonay which was actually full at same price as a beer $3.20

But our perennial favourite is still much closer to home in the United fuel roadhouse stop in Glenburn Victoria on the way to the snow.

Its a Vegie burger on a plate with chips and salad at $8.95 and the coffee is one of the best we have found.

While its 120km return trip from home we still drive up there occasionally for no other reason than the meal.

Speaking of good value meals. The wife and I went to the Astra Hotel in Broken Hill for a farewell last night.

Starters,,,, the average price was around $20.

The mains were around $37.

The mains were huge. I could almost fit them in a closed hand. LOL

Highly unrecommended as value for money.

The barra at the Adelaide River pub (NT) was very nice, but it took an hour and a half to arrive.
