Hi all

Can anyone suggest a good suspension crowd in Melbourne.

I want to get my suspension checked and upgraded if necessary to give a better (softer) ride.
No lift required.
Happy 4 wheeling

Hi Woodsy

You can't really do it quite like that , all standard aftermarket springs are harder and actually worse given the same load - what you need is simply to change your shockers.

I use the 40mm adjustable Tough dogs about $200 each , set easily as required.

Actually if you want to play - you could borrow my 1st set till Xmas.

They are worn now and won't adjust up as hard any more so were replaced.

But otherwise quite ok - I take them as spares now on Canning type trips.

You have no idea what your talking about. Good suspension companies offer as range of spring and shock rates for most of the major makes/models.

Shocks wont fix a spring issue. On top of that the shock valving needs to be matched to the spring rate if your looking to improve the ride.

As suggested below go see your local ARB and check out the range on offer.

"You have no idea what your talking about."

Whyallacookie , If you know of some lower rate aftermarket springs please lets us know , there will be a line up for them, your ARB dealer doesn't know anything about them.

Springs work with a variable known as spring rate.

Put simply , springs are supplied with a rating basically X kilograms causes X compression , lets say that 200 kg compresses spring 1 inch.

Your aftermarket companies normal product simply do not supply springs for cars like Patrol where a lesser force e.g. 180kg will cause a 1 inch deflection.

You can always get special products made of course but your typical aftermarket 2inch lift will need 220 kg to cause 1 inch compression - i.e. they are designed to hold an increased load.

A Byproduct of this is that without this load car springs are harder - i.e. do not deflect as much.
Hence 4wding articulation performance is reduced by most of you normal 2inch
aftermarket kits, but ground clearance and load carrying are improved.

In this exact example I was reffering to one of my setups in which those shocks are a big improvement over the stock unit.

Not going to waste my time, whilst you are partially correct, a stiffer spring can effect travel, there is a lot more to it than that. You right buy cheap springs you will get what you pay for. The original poster should seek out advice based on them seeing his car.

By the way if you want to do some homework check out variable rate springs, also you will find there are different height springs, different windings, different thickness all changing the outcome.

Try ARB, they have different rated springs.
