Hi,
I have a question re my existing camper
suspension set-up.
I have the simple spring (x 5) set up (basic semi off-road) with the axle above
the springs. I am wanting to raise the trailer's height, as it is too low - so my thought was to place the axle under
the springs, just to invert it. This would give me about 2 or more inches of lift. Is this something that can be done - will it work ok in this orientation?
Cheers,
Smokey.

Hi Smokey,
I have done the same thing, or you could fit larger tyres, just check that your drop is long enough.
You can always dig a hole to drop the wheel into.

I don't have any photos, however if you have a look under the trailer you will see pretty quickly which nuts you have to undo, everything is pretty open and easy to get to.
Basically, take the
wheels and hubs off , undo the U bolts and move the axle from above
the springs to under
the springs and refit everything you took off.
I had a mate help me which made life a lot easier.

Hi,
Is there not a lug that the spacer locks into under the axle? Do you need to weld?

Yes, there is a locating plate that centralises over the centre bolt. It will need to be welded on. You can just flip the axle 180 but if it has a camber bend (it should have) then it will need to be rebent first.

Was half expecting you to say 14". Have you measured the distance under the axle and compared to the diatance under the lowest part of the vehicle? You might just be surprised. There is no need to have the trailer way up in the air. I have 10R15 tyres (which i appreciate are a bit taller than what you have) with a leaf spring setup (normal under axle) and it has heaps of clearance. I even have the spare tyre underneath as
well as a
water tank and have never had any problems off-road.
You do realise that even if you put the spring above the axle the lowest ground clearance point remains unchanged!

Hi Moose,
Thanx for the reply - My main issue is the rear of the trailer, where there is a tail panel welded under the tailgate (houses the lights and number plate), it is only 4 inches off the ground. My car is raised and has more clearance than that. As it sits now, the car is higher than the trailer and the draw bar slopes up to the tow bar on the car.
I have a
water tank underneath also and it is in danger of being damaged. My other alternative down the track is to put on a another
suspension set.
Thanx.

Make sure that your canvas will still reach the ground!

Hi Shaker,
Yep, have been told that holes can be dug for the trailer
wheels, or tyres deflated if canvas too short. At present tent is a bit baggy anyway.
Cheers.

Smokey
In case you are unaware, I understand that if you raise the ground clearance of the trailer chassis that you must contemplate the length of canvas drop as it may be compromised and fall short of the ground.
