Is anybody towing anything resembling a 2.8tonne van with a current model 3.0l manual Nissan Patrol? How is it going? Have you made any modifications?

G/Day

We tow just under 2500kgs with full water tanks, the only mod we have done is a Steinbauer Chip, it has improved the performance by about 20 to 25 %, also our Patrol is an Automatic and up hill standing starts are a breeze.

Cheers

Thanks Daza,

There is a lopt of opinion regarding chips, exhausts, temp guages etc. It sounds like you only have the chip and have not installed the others. Some feedback from the Steinbauer distributors is there are current model Patrols with a smoke problem once the chip is installed. Are you generally happy with the chip's value for performance?

Our vehicle is still under manufacturers warranty, so we haven't touched the exhaust, so when it goes in for a service I just disconnect the chip module, it takes a couple of minutes, also no smoke problems, just make sure if you get a chip installed put the vehicle on a dyno before and after so you know what the difference is.

Hi

we tow a van thats 2350kg loaded with an auto and it pulls it ok, can be a little sluggish on hills though. ( might put a chip in if they give more power)
The patrol ( auto) can only tow 2500kg legally anyway so I'm just about on the limit, not sure about manual

Hi,
It might pay to check over here http://www.patrol4x4.com they can tell you what mods to do for your 3lt to help it go better and last longer. Just do a search there on 3lt mods.

For those with the Auto's; if you are not doing it already, make sure you are out of O/D under 100KPH.

At the risk of telling you what you blokes with the auto's already know, the torque converter locks up at 80KPH with O/D off and 100KPH with O/D on. If you get back below 80 on a hill, manually pull it back to 2nd and it will lock again down to 60KPH.

The name of the game is to keep it locked. Less power loss and no heat. You can tell it coming in and out by 500 RPM rise or drop in revs.

I have a trans temp gauge and I can tell you this box can be kept dead cold if you drive it right but can get pretty hot if you just drive it around in D with O/D on, particularly heavy towing.

I have towed a variety fo things with mine, 1200KG C/T, 1800KG enclosed race car trailer and 2500 KG Boat. 130,0000 KM in all. It will do it all but you have to be carefull with that O/D button and don't be afraid to yank it back to 2nd with the stick on steeper hills.

For the bloke with the manual, normal rules probably apply, don't tow in 5th unless a light load.

This engine performs best if you let it rev, it gets hot in the box and EGT dept (also have one of those gauges) if you make it grunt like a Tojo.
